2024 New Year Greetings Shalom! I anticipate 2024 to be a year led by our God of peace! As we fix our gaze on Ebenezer God with our faith anchored in strong hope, I invite all members of the KUMWNetwork to embark on another new year graciously given to us. Let us take each step together with the Lord, walking on the path of being the salt and light of this world. Looking back on the past months, I once again realize that everything has been God's grace. The reality in front of us may be difficult, and it seemed like we started a challenging year amid unexpected turmoil. But we are confident that 2023 will be remembered as a year of consistently walking with the Lord without wavering. Certainly, there were some moments of parting and pain in the current situation of the denomination that we had anticipated. However, even in those moments, we can firmly say that the reason the NNKUMw has been able to walk in the path of the Lord until now is because of God's love and grace. God's ministry goes on forever in steadfastness. In places where no one wants to step in, where there is only isolation and suffering, in those places where hope seems to be lost... the Lord has shed tears and called the NNKUMw. Through the grace of the cross, we humbly responded. Unswayed by the trends of the world, we focused solely on God. Praying that united, our passion and service may be used as wholesome tools for building the kingdom of God. We have offered the fruits of love to the Lord. Rather than worrying about what the future holds, we want to move forward into 2024 with firm faith, holding tightly the hands of the Lord who walks with us. In times of crisis, we hope to seize opportunities, broaden our perspective beyond narrow views, express understanding, embrace diversity, support each other, and dream of the fragrance of Christ revealed to the world. Preparing for a new year with a holy and healthy sense of responsibility, we earnestly pray for the revival and growth of the NNKUMw. As prayer warriors and diligent servants of the Lord, we proclaim joy to the nations, blessing all the members of the NNKUMw who are tirelessly working on the front. We thank you, love you, and bless you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! With thanks, President of NNKUMw |

On December 2nd, Saturday, from 10 am to 3 pm, 14 members, including the executives, members, and two missionaries, gathered for an executive training and planning retreat at the residence of Dorothy Kim. In the morning session, we heard the testimony of Missionary Kim, who is serving in China, and enjoyed a brief time of songs and stories from Missionary Bong-rang Heo. Born in Beijing, China, and still fulfilling her missionary calling, the words and testimony of Missionary Kim deeply moved and challenged us. Her unwavering life despite facing three imprisonments, served as a great testimony. Witnessing her unyielding faith even in the face of trials, and her determination to resemble the life of Jesus, persevering through hardships by recalling the image of the cross in times of suffering, further humbled us. Meeting and hearing the stories of a missionary who resembles Christ is truly a grace. Living in the United States and New York during this era, I couldn't help but feel embarrassed by how easy my faith life is over here. With pride in my volunteer work and dedication to various tasks through the KUMW Network, I felt even more ashamed. It was a time of repentance, reflecting on my daily life despite my efforts to always hold onto the Word and pray, knowing that I still stumble and make mistakes in daily life. It was also a decisive moment for me as I committed myself to live a life as a disciple of Jesus Christ without regrets. The afternoon session consisted of the executive meeting and planning, in which we discussed how to allocate the mission donations collected diligently through this year's bazaar, as well as prepared for the New Year's Eve service in 2024. This year, the conference decided to send mission funds to North Korea's Hamgyong Province to send baby formula, help the homeless in New York's Far Rockaway, send Christmas gifts to refugee children in New York, send hats, socks, and scarves to daily laborers cared for by Pastor Eunhee Park, and providing rent assistance for single moms in New York. These initiatives were chosen to distribute mission funds to five different locations. We are grateful to be able to participate in these communal mission efforts this year. I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the three members and Hye-yoon Han who attended from the Staten Island Church. We are aware that executives and members who have worked together in other regional conferences are undergoing difficult times due to churches leaving the denomination. Some churches in the New York Conference have also left, resulting in a somewhat stagnant state. Hye-yoon Han, the former president of the conference, has left the denomination as well. Thus, she stepped down from the presidency but decided to continue working as an executive, expressing gratitude for almost a decade of hard work. We were concerned we would be deeply saddened by her leaving. However, sister Han, leaving aside the denomination's issues, emphasized that the purpose of the UMW is to serve God's mission and be an institution of mission. She decided to continue working as an executive, bringing comfort and inspiration to those gathered. Yes, the UMW is a gathering called by God. It is He who invites us, we who are lacking to serve in the position of doing God's mission. He has allowed us to participate in the calling to share His love with our neighbors. Today, we are thankful for living in the ongoing history of God's grace. (Written by Sunghea Rhim, Chair of the NNKUMw Reading Program, Korean Methodist Church and Institute) |

New York Conference KUMw Network Sharing Warmth with Neighbors The New York Conference KUMw Network has collected proceeds from this year's bazaar and donations to help our neighbors who are in need. These funds were sent to the NNKUMw for mission funds, and the remaining funds were used to initiate five ministries to help the less fortunate in New York. The New York Conference KUMw Network adheres to the principle that the mission funds collected in a given year should be used within that same year. Therefore, various activities were carried out, including support for the rent of Korean single mothers, assistance for Pastor Eunhee Park, who provides daily lunches to the daily workers, mission funds for Far Rockaway in Queens to help those in need, for supporting the refugee families in New York City, as well as sending formula to the babies of North Korean military defectors. This was the second phase of our ministry helping refugees in New York City, with the first phase that had begun in April of this year with relief item distribution. Currently, 60 families reside in a hotel in Bayside, with 112 youths ranging from children to 18 years old. In collaboration with the Sanctuary Church, the New York Conference KUMw Network dedicatedly prepared homemade dinners for these families, delivering them along with Christmas presents for children and teenagers. Witnessing the gratitude and joy of the refugee families who received the meal and gifts, this Christmas became a time filled with thanks and joy. Additionally, our conference network learned about the historical fact that young soldiers from South Korea, captured during the Korean War, were enslaved in mines in the Hamgyong Province of North Korea. The conference KUMw Network discovered this during a "Human Rights Seminar" held in September. Furthermore, it was revealed that the descendants of these soldiers, who are prisoners of war (POWs), are suffering greatly due to a lack of food, especially infants experiencing malnutrition due to the absence of formula. Upon learning that sending livestock milk powder directly to these babies would prevent confiscation by North Korean authorities, the New York Conference KUMw Network sent funds to purchase livestock milk powder. We realize that while we enjoy many comforts in life, others are living in hunger and deprivation. As stated in the Lord's teachings, even a small contribution, when united, can alleviate the burdened hearts of those in need. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ - Matthew 25:35,40 ESV - (Written by Dorothy Kim, NY Conference Treasurer, Bayside KUMC) |

N. Georgia Conference KUMw Network The N. Georgia Conference KUMw Network Annual Meeting took place on Thursday, December 8th, at 5:00 PM, with 11 executives in attendance. During this gathering, we spent time reflecting on the activities that took place throughout the year 2023, particularly through Vice President Youngsin Joo's testimony about her experience at the Human Rights Seminar. We were able to renew our hearts of dedication toward addressing the weighty issue of racial discrimination at UMW. Through various seminars over the past year, we have gained knowledge that we may not have had if it were not for these opportunities. And we are grateful for the establishment of a solid educational program that emerged after the pandemic. Despite all the events that occurred during the year, we were grateful for how God has protected us throughout. It was also a time of coming together to discuss plans for the new year, 2024. While some executives withdrew from the Methodist Church, everyone resolved to continue providing ongoing assistance and support, even if they did not join the leadership team. It was a heartwarming moment where, transcending denominations and affiliations, a resolution was made to unite under the holy purpose of 'missions' to advance God's Kingdom. We elected new executives who would be serving next year, and the assembly concluded with discussions about upcoming events, activities, and new items for sale in the bazaar in the coming year.
Book Recommendation Book Title: "Evangelism in the Post-Christian Era"
No matter the era, Christianity has faced challenges. But the difficulties of this era are distinctly different from those in the past. The hostility towards the Christian faith, coupled with a sharp culture that is not anti-Christian but rather a secular culture opposing Christianity, has created a readiness to cut away Christianity at any moment. We find ourselves in an era where challenges to traditional Christianity clash with opposing views on sexuality and gender, claiming that Christianity violates human rights. Living in an era where the influence of Christianity is diminishing, we must contemplate more than ever how to convey the gospel effectively. We need to explore ways to share the gospel with the present generation in a new and compelling manner. The dynamic evangelism demonstrated by the early church must be replicated in a contemporary context. Many people view Christianity as hostile and irrelevant to their lives. How can we guide their interest in the gospel? To achieve this, we must first establish deep personal relationships with non-Christians. We need to make the gospel attention-worthy, explaining what outstanding elements Christianity possesses. We must be prepared to respond truthfully to doubts and questions about the Christian faith. Our struggle to regain lost trust from non-Christians encounters significant clashes in a culture dominated by non-Christian thinking and concerns. How can we maintain our faith faithfully while communicating with the world around us? Therefore, the church must train all its members to develop a critical mindset, allowing them to participate in politics as Christians without succumbing to ideologies that seek to dominate the world. This is necessary to live with light and salt without being corrupted by the decaying world. Non-Christians today often question the historical injustices committed by the church. They may bring up issues such as tolerating slavery, oppressing women, or recent cases of rejecting homosexuality or transgender individuals. In response, we must answer with a humble yet clear stance. (Written by Meesook Lee, Reading Program Committee Member) |
