The New Normal and KUMW Due to COVID-19, we have entered the ‘New Normal’ era. The New Normal era entails experiencing many social crises: health, economy, politics, culture, and environmental crisis. The good thing is that we are now able to connect online with more people safely and conveniently in the proposed range without the risk of in-person encounters. However, as this improvement is solely technology-based, humanity tends to be easily neglected, and leadership–which meant to take charge of upper and lower relations–has become quite ineffective in this non-face-to-face domain. As a result, the ideal leadership required by society is also changing significantly. As horizontal networks take place in the online contact (on-tact) domain, a new type of leadership is being asked for. This new type of leadership must develop humanity and a sense of inner-self and have sensitivity, empathy, intuition, consideration, and communication skills. It requires reading the minds of individuals whom you are interacting indirectly through the screen, feeling with them, and having intuitive insights into the situation beyond the screen as well. It requires integrating our minds by communicating from the other person's perspective, human to human. These leadership qualities are those that women already have. Members of the NNKUMw should develop such abilities into the new type of leadership required by society and the church. In order to lead the New Normal era, you need a power to connect the world, and that power comes from the internal integration within the self. To do that, you have to dive into your inner-self and become your own leader. Specifically, I think we can be the influential female leaders in this era when (1) we realistically put our beliefs and ideals into practice, (2) when words and actions correspond with each other (3) when our self is in harmony and gives positive influence to the outside world. We live in a divided society today. American society is vastly polarized, with racism and hate crimes worsening, and young people of color who have no hope for the future are becoming criminals committing hate crimes against Asians. In addition, the UMC is also divided over the issue of homosexuality, and divisions within the KUMC are intensifying. We know that the Bible tells us that division is not God’s approach; instead, what God wants for us are peace, love, and unity. According to the history of UMC, when the church was headed towards separation, the UMW got together and prevented the division of the church, as well as contributed to creating a bright future for the church through life-saving missions. What is the mission that our KUMW must now hold onto? We must look after our brothers and sisters who are mentally and economically struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic and Asian hate crimes. And we must not condemn people over social and church issues but let one another know that we are precious beings connected altogether. And we must act as stepping stones for our next generation to be able to create a better future as those with potential and hope on this American land. I believe that God, who uses the most vulnerable, has called us feeble NNKUMw members into this holy responsibility to life-saving missions and the unity of the church.
After the Environmental Seminar... The confession of joy, “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made," is neglected as the earth is being polluted––the sky, land, sea, everywhere. Through this environment seminar, I think that we must remind ourselves that protecting the environment is not a choice but our duty; that even small practices should become a habit toward improvement, as well as remind our next generations that this world is not ‘owned’ by us, and teach them the meaning of “co-existence” (living together and helping each other). It is easy to make inconvenient habits into convenient ones, but it is difficult to turn convenient habits into inconvenient ones. With firm dedication, we must appreciate that it is not too late, and though if it may be a bit uncomfortable and difficult, firmly pledge to make daily practices in life to protect the environment. Environment Stewards Environmental issues, pollution, destruction of nature, environmental protection… These are all familiar words to us. Yet we all realize it is not easy to continually practice these actions to protect nature in our daily routine. Nevertheless, we always feel pressured to do something. Through this environment seminar, I wanted us to feel a new sense of alertness and crisis by learning about how far the global environment has been destroyed and what is happening due to its impact. Through Executive Director Myungrae Lee’s "Saving Life and Creating Green Churches," we were introduced to a crisis much more serious than expected. And with the three presenters’ topic presentations, our network members had the opportunity to research and study for themselves. To share some of the ideas presented: At the NEKUMW Network level, we decided to organize the good ideas, make a checklist of action items, distribute them to each person, and give prizes to those who did well. The ideas were about providing opportunities for education through various seminars and classes, as well as promote activities to protect the environment at each event. At the church level, we decided to dedicate an Environmental Sunday, educate all the members, then act altogether such as picking up the trash, and so on. Some suggested creating eco-friendly gatherings, campaigning in churches, and creating gardens to provide fresh vegetables for church members and neighbors. There were also opinions to make a battery collection box for easy recycling of batteries. At the home and individual levels, there were numerous ideas such as carrying stainless steel tumblers everywhere, using dry kitchen towels, cutting old cotton sheets to use as wipe cloths, buying local food, using glass instead of plastic, etc. The important thing is application. Our network is planning to create an environmental team to come up with opportunities to be able to apply these ideas continually and specifically from now on for an environmental movement. Living life as God’s environmental steward! I’ll run hard this year for this calling of God. (Written by Jin Kim, President of New England Conference KUMw network, N. Boston KUMC)
As participants shared small know-how stories and actions that could be practiced in churches and UMWs, they were all becoming environmentalists. We talked about Jay B. McDaniel's ‘God’s grace is in two colors–red as in the grace of the cross centered in the church community, and green as in the grace of His creation, provisions, and the entire natural environment. Just as the Red and Green grace of God combined to foresee the future of humanity, Luther's Reformation in the 16th century discarded papalism and found the gospel, the Second Reformation in the Ecological Age required to abandon land-ruling theology and human-centeredness. We also discussed programs supported by UMW in this regard. (Written by Susan Kim, New England Conference KUMw Network, St. John’s UMC)
Detergents that Affect the Human Body and the Environment. As housewives, we use detergents everyday–to wash vegetables and fruits, clean dishes after meals, and do laundry, etc. These detergents contain many chemicals that affect the human body and the environment. Even after washing, the invisible harmful ingredients that remain in the dishes and clothing can cause many diseases when it comes in contact with the human body or the food remains.
Hazardous ingredients in Dish Soap How can we reduce the use of chemical detergents?
** Use baking soda, vinegar, salt, flour, etc. to remove pesticides from fruit surfaces. We hope to thrive physically and spiritually in this beautiful nature created by God, and to pass on a better environment to our future.
After Cal-Nevada Conference KUMw Network’s Spring Bazaar… On the morning of April 24th, I loaded the bazaar items and headed to Santa Clara Church. It was an hour-long drive of tears blessed by God’s grace. With the dedication and leadership of the heads of each church UMW leaders over the three weeks, we received a lot of bazaar orders. So the tears were tears of gratitude and joy, knowing their heartfelt support and prayers. Even in situations where face-to-face worship is difficult due to the pandemic, God has fulfilled our needs. Thank you to the leaders of each church UMW, for all of your hard work. God’s work bears beautiful fruit in unity and harmony, not alone. I’m thankful that our hearts and prayers became one to be used in expanding God’s Kindom and revealing His glory.
Who is Our True Neighbor? On April 25th, we had our second Virtual School with Rev. Taehoo Lee. This was possible because of our determined minds to continue learning through zoom, since we were not able to have our leadership training due to COVID-19. In the future world that would bring tremendous change, I believe every member of NNKUMw across the nation would have the desire to broaden our understanding of missions, seeking God's will. It was a touching time in which we were reminded of our identity as a women mission community and, thanks to Rev. Lee, deeply realized that we must be friends of the poor and needy as Jesus did during His ministry on earth. Rev. Taehoo Lee began his lecture with a theological interpretation of why he had spent nearly 20 years in the most dangerous area in Philadelphia. He said salvation is the recovery of Shalom, not just a no-conflict state. It represents a very holistic meaning of Shalom flourished in the Garden of Eden. There are four states of Shalom that we need to restore. 1) Spiritual Shalom: Peace in our relationship with God. These states of Shalom are true Shalom, and all the theological grounds are attributed to the Mission Statement of Jesus in Luke 4:16-21. After Rev. Lee’s first ministry of seven years, he found his way to becoming a true neighbor while praying and finally went into the slums of Philadelphia, where he lived with them and became their true friend. As a strange neighbor, he first cleaned the neighborhood, planted flowers, helped them with their needs, and became their neighbor. When they finally opened up their hearts was when they opened the summer vacation bible school in the streets for two months. During the long summer vacation, children who had nowhere to go learned the Bible, sang hymns, played games, learned exercises and experienced together what the love of God and Jesus Christ through Rev. Lee’s love and devotion. Having had a lot more time this past year, I got to think a lot about what it is to live keeping my faith as Jesus’ disciple. Hence, I was deeply shocked and motivated to listen to Rev. Lee’s life. What exactly can verbal confession of faith achieve? As I was deliberating, the pastor assigned us a question to think about: "Who am I as a woman, an immigrant, disciple of Christ? What does it mean that I'm a woman? I thought that the virtues of sensitivity, warmth, empathy, and respect for life, etc that we women can only possess could be better than men. As an immigrant, I came to think about how to view the world. I think we are destined to live forever as immigrants on this American soil. It is an absolute truth that even after decades of living in the United States, we are still seen as immigrants in the eyes of white people. Therefore, I think we must not ignore the difficulties of immigrant communities with compassion and mercy, unite together and maintain a cooperative relationship to help one another. We must be more active in being their neighbor. God spoke to the people of Israel several times to "Look after the fatherless, widows, and foreigners residing among you” and that we “were also foreigners in Egypt.” This word applies to us even today. I felt very ashamed to look back on my selfish faith, only being satisfied with the blessings I received from the church. The pastor now started raising funds to provide after-school study rooms and a space for the people, especially for growing children who have forgotten what human dignity is due to drugs, violence and gun accidents in the neighborhood. I deeply thank Rev. Taehoo Lee for shining us with light and warmth in my heart like a shining star in this world, and I pray that all the future missions would bear many good fruits in the Lord.
Participating in the Second Virtual School on “Blooming Flowers in the Slums” Fulfilling salvation together, hand-in-hand. Rev. Taehoo Lee, the speaker for NNKUMw’s Second Virtual School (which was started with a purpose to discover unexplored paths), was living a life of ‘fulfilling salvation together’ in the slums of Philadelphia–on which even the U.S. government had given up and neglected. He defined salvation as the ‘recovery of the broken Shalom.’ His testimony was a testament to salvation ‘fulfilled together,’ as he described his ministry in the slums–where he went in holding on to Luke 4:16-21, Jesus’ mission statement. As he became a true family to the children and neighbors there who were being neglected with racial discrimination, making them smile again by finding the image of God in them through the gospel, and allowed them to dream new dreams as God’s children… all of these things were a testament to salvation fulfilled together, along with the gospel’s power that started from being a good neighbor taking out the trash. As he shared his new dream and vision of constructing a building that provides a space for children to stay after school, by the restoration of Shalom throughout the 13 years of summer camp that he has served, I could see that he was filled with God’s grace, blessed as if he could see the building already built on the empty, demolished land. Thanks to Rev. Lee, the place that was regarded as being so dangerous had become a safe haven under God’s presence. He shared that he was so thankful for them, for getting him going with his ministries. The slum children’s response to “God’s love you” is “Yes, I know.” From his testimony and confession, I could see the ministry site building ‘the world as God intends it to be’ with the power of the gospel. He pointed out the wrong concept of thinking that ‘evangelism=local neighborhood, mission=overseas.” He suggested to us the direction that we can take as women, to carefully look around in our surroundings and reach out to our neighbors in need, as a true angel. He raised 5 questions, surrendering all our life answers and solutions to the Holy Spirit, and ended the seminar. The 5 questions were: This Second Virtual School was a precious time for me to remind myself as a believer living in the COVID-pandemic, that: now is the time to make peace as a peace maker in this broken social Shalom, to fulfill my duties as a caretaker of the broken ecological Shalom, examine what had not been done despite the learning, and to commit again to live out the gospel. I extend my greeting of the true meaning of Shalom and thanks to Rev. Taewoo Lee for leading a seminar so meaningful and beneficial that I can’t summarize in these short pages, all the executives for organizing this Virtual School and all the members of NNKUMw. Shalom~ (Written by Hyeyoung Han, Cal-Pacific Conference KUMw Network, Bethel KUMC) |

Title: The Footprints of Giants As if extracting silk from silkworms, this book draws out valuable principles of leadership through tracing the footsteps of numerous famous figures, organizations, churches, and countries in history. It talks in great detail and with a fascinating perspective about how a community's victory is only possible with ‘great followers’ along with an exceptional leader, the overall aspects of leadership, various cultures and styles, leadership killers that hamper leadership, as well as leadership that sets up the next generation, etc. What's more surprising is that behind one's greatness, there was always Someone who had allowed the person to surpass the situation, environment, and inevitable destiny, demonstrating leadership and servanthood by lowering Himself despite such holiness and sanctity. Right behind the paths of obedient followers who relied on Him and followed His footsteps, are the footsteps of a giant that remains in eternity. In this regard, this book is not only a valuable history textbook about people's lives; with a little more open heart you’ll be able find God's amazing messages in this book. Through this book, you’ll realize the principles of leadership, and if you are humbly willing to obey the One, the true example of leadership–you yourself can be a giant leading this rapidly-changing generation!
