New York Conference KUMw Network’s “Walk for Mission” We remember the New York Conference KUMw Network hosting the Walk for Mission event in Bear Mountain, New York, at the end of April every year for more than a decade. Sadly, we could not host it in 2020 due to COVID-19. This year, however, as we were fully vaccinated, we decided to host the walk at each church level to support Rev. Taehoo Lee’s mission in Philadelphia. Our New York Conference KUMw Network set the stage. (Written by Yangsook Cha, NY Conference KUMw Network, Korea Methodist Church & Institue)
After the 16th Walk for Mission The 16th annual Walk for Mission organized by New York Conference KUMw Network was postponed for a week from May 8 due to our church situation. So on Saturday, May 15th, six people, including pastor, gathered at 10:30 a.m. to participate in this year’s Walk for Mission for the Philadelphia slum missions. As a first-time participant, I was grateful and thrilled to be part of God's planned missions for the poor in Philadelphia. We walked and chatted, sightseeing the park’s transformation from being an army base to a community park for the residents, as well as the nature’s tranquility and beautiful scenery of the waters of Little Neck Bay and Long Island. As we were walking for about an hour and sharing one another’s footsteps, I felt that our united hearts and collaborative action would be pleasing in God’s sight, and to think our heartfelt effort could play a part in God’s work for missions, my heart was filled with thanksgiving for such glorious partaking. After an hour-long walk, we settled down for lunch and shared the delicious kimbap, fruit and drinks prepared by Dorothy Kim, enjoyed one another’s company talking about God's work and our stories, fully appreciating the beautiful nature and weather, and returned to the church at around 3 p.m. Thank you God for giving us beautiful weather and allowing us to walk for missions. Thank you again for participating and praying with us, Pastor Moon and his wife, Kyung T. Lee, Inja Ahn, Dorothy Kim. Through partaking in this small but meaningful action, I believed that God’s will and work for the Philadelphia slum missions would be fulfilled. With such thought, I was able to wrap up the day with feelings of satisfaction and joy. “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58) (Written by Insook Ko, New York Conference KUMw Network, The Shepherd United Methodist Church)
The 16th New York Conference KUMw Network’s “Walk for Mission” The New York Conference KUMw Network had felt sad not being able to hold a Walk for Mission last year due to the pandemic. Hearing the news that other networks decided to carry out the walk at the local levels, each church in our network decided to hold the event during the month of May. This year’s Walk for Mission was especially dedicated to help the slum missions covered at the 2nd Virtual School, and it felt like an opportunity to share and practice the lessons we’ve learned from the Virtual School. Just like the very first time we had started the Walk for Mission amongst the executives’ family members, we were a little worried about the event. Yet as we prepared the walk through lots of prayers as well as gatherings while adhering to the health and safety guidelines as each church–it grew our passion for mission even more. And I can testify that we were able to gain confidence that we can pull through missions no matter how difficult a situation may get, as well as experience a thankful heart to God for always being alongside us when we take our first baby steps. The network executives collected personal funds to prepare kimbap, tangerines, and snacks to hand out to the participants. I was thankful to the “Serving Coffee” Missionary for providing us warm and fragrant coffee. We collected the mission offerings in the envelopes that we had distributed that contained a statement sheet describing the purpose of the Walk for Mission. Despite the cold weather, I was thankful to have met everyone and happily chat with one another after a long year. I thank God for allowing us to walk with happy steps to raise mission funds under the spring sun. - Myungrea Kim Lee Likewise, Bethel Church held theirs at Van Cortlandt Park on the 8th, Staten Island Church on the same day under the umbrellas, The Shepherd United Methodist Church on the 15th, Plainview KUMC on the 16th, Astoria UMC told us each of their ministry groups would support mission funds, New Dream KUMC also shared news that they would support through mission funds. One executive’s family is dedicated to giving $4 mission offers each day for 15 days. Half-worried and half-excited about it, we exchanged and shared good ideas with one another. When the day of each church’s Walk for Mission came, messages went back and forth inside the group chat filled with encouragements and prayers. Uploading photos of how the walk went–one after another–we were getting through these hard times of the pandemic. It was another thankful experience seeing how when we obey with a ‘yes’ to the voice of God who calls us to mission, He does remarkable things for us. Another step forward we go!
Now is Our Time to Act!
(Written by Myungrea Kim Lee, Executive Director of NNKUMw)
My Own Little Practice to Protect the Environment Attending the environmental seminars every Monday throughout May, I reflected on what I can practically do in my daily life to make a difference. I realized that more and more churches have started to use reusable cups and plates instead of disposable ones made of styrofoam. Something that I have started recently is no longer buying sturdy laundry detergent containers made of plastic, since it causes pollution. Instead, I have started purchasing an alternative detergent material––eco-friendly paper detergent sheets. These paper-compressed products have dramatically smaller echo footprints than liquid and powdered detergents. TruEarth's packaging uses no plastic and reduces transportation fuel consumption and global warming carbon emissions by 94 percent compared to today's most commonly-used liquids and powder detergents. More than 30 billion laundry are processed in North America every year, and this causes tremendous harm to the environment. Today, the best liquid detergent weighs more than 40 grams. One paper detergent weighs less than 3 g or is 94% lighter! Paper-type laundry detergent, which has much less trucking and no plastic containers, relieves the environmental burden. I was introduced to this product by watching an advertisement that featured detergent products that easily dissolve in water when placed inside the laundry machine. The laundry went well without any problems, of course. Though the price range runs a little high compared to the normal plastic products, the fact that it does not use plastic well serves its purpose. 1.5 With Greta Thunbury Editor: JaeGak Han Greta Tunbury, a 16-year-old Swedish teenager, is a front-runner in the global climate justice movement. In the era of climate crisis in which even school life is under a threat, she began a "school strike" in August 2018, urging teenagers and older citizens around the world to take action for the climate crisis. Since then, the "school strike for climate" protests have snowballed, sweeping the world–including Belgium, Australia and Germany. On March 15th and May 24th of this year, a global climate strike was organized to help hundreds of thousands of students fill streets instead of schools and restore a future stolen by greenhouse gas emissions. “1.5 With Greta Tunbury” contains Greta's speech at the French National Assembly (House of Representatives) last July 23rd as well as the Korean citizens' responses to her speech. The making of this book was led by JaeGak Han (Energy Climate Policy Research Institute), who is in charge of the organization of the ‘Climate Crisis Emergency Action’ movement. It calls for social awareness and hope with the slogan “Hope Comes When We Act.” It also contains voices of the youths organizing "Youth Climate Action" and preparing for "Climate Litigation" against the government, including young people in research and practice under the name of "Climate Resolution," as well as activists, experts, and citizens in various fields such as women, health care, labor, science and technology, politics, ecology/education, agriculture and human rights. As the authors’ collaborative effort, all the royalties of this book’s proceeds will go to supporting "Climate Crisis Emergency Action" (24.com) (Written by Marian Kim, Reading Program Committee Coordinator, N.

3rd Virtual School : "The History of Korean Immigration & Faith Education for the Second Generation." The green month of June has arrived. Thank you all very much for participating in the 2nd KUMW Virtual School at the end of April. We are going to host our 3rd Virtual School in June over three sessions. We ask for your participation again this time and help spread the word. Today, however, Korean churches are challenged by the religious education of the second generation. Through this lecture, we will evaluate in-depth the current status of Korean immigration history and the challenges facing the Korean churches regarding passing on the faith to the second-generation, as well as come up with solutions to these issues.
