전국에 계신 한인여선교회 회원들께!

한인여선교회 전국연합회는 2021년도 코로나로 인해 비대면으로 지도자훈련과 다양한 사역을 실시했습니다. ‘학당’ 이름으로 세미나를 5회에 걸쳐 실시했고, 지역연합회가 참여하여 마스크 보내기, 코로나 방역 물품, 어린이 겨울용품, 어린이와 청소년들을 위한 사역비 등을 미원주민 보호지역과 오클라호마 연회 인디언 컨퍼런스에 전달했습니다.

또한 몽골에서는 줌으로 치유세미나, 러시아 블라디보스토크에서는 줌으로 여선교회 지도자훈련을 실시하였습니다. 이 모든 사역은 여러분들의 기도와 선교비로 이루어졌기에 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

올해도 코로나로 인해 국내 여행과 많은 사람들이 모이는 것이 위험해서 전국지도자훈련을 실시하기 어렵기에 11월 15일(월)에 줌으로 총회를 갖고자 합니다. 올해 총회에서는 2022년-2023년 전국연합회를 이끌어 갈 새 임원 선출이 있을 예정입니다.

NNKUMw General Conference Announcement

To our beloved KUMW members nationwide!

Due to the pandemic, our 2021 Leadership Training and various ministries have been held virtually. The ‘Virtual School’ was held five sessions and the local networks participated to deliver masks, disinfection and quarantine supplies, children's winter supplies, ministry funds for children and teenagers, etc were delivered to ​Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference.  In addition, we held our KUMw leadership training via zoom: Healing Seminar in Mongolia, as well as Christian Women Leadership Training in Vladivostok, Russia. Thank you all very much for your prayers and support for all of these ministries.

This year, we have again decided that it would be difficult to hold the NNKUMw Leadership Training due to complications and risks involving domestic travel and large in-person gathering, so we would like to hold the General Conference via Zoom on November 15. 

At this year's general conference, we will be electing new executives to lead the NNKUMw for 2022-2023. Please take a look at the information below and attend to lead the future of our NNKUMw.

제14회 뉴잉글랜드 연합 선교 찬양의 밤 “감사함으로 하나님을 찬양하라 “

2021년 올해 찬양의 밤은 참으로 기쁘고 주님을 향한 간절함 그리고 믿음의 확신에 불을 지핀 찬양의 밤이었습니다. 2020년 3월 팬데믹으로 인해 모든 사회 활동이 중단되고 주일예배와 봉사 또한 중단되었던 한 해!! 또한 교회 안의 성가대는 1년 6개월 동안 찬양을 할 수 없었고, 예배는 오로지 온라인으로만 가능했던 상황!! 그러다 보니 온라인 주일예배만으로 감사드렸던 상황에서 찬양을 드리고 싶은 경우에는 개개인이 사전녹화를 통하여 특송으로 대체 할 수밖에 없었기에 이번 찬양의 밤을 통해 함께 성가대원 또는 가족, 청년들, 중고등부 학생들이 모여 함께 찬양하는 시간은 더욱 주님을 향한 갈증 해소와 함께 앞으로 우리가 나아가고 싶은 방향을 제시하는 은혜가 되는 감사한 시간이었습니다.

첫 찬양으로 무지개교회의 ‘주를 향한 나의 사랑은’ 은 저를 그리고 대면 찬양의 밤에 모인 성도들 모두 그 찬양을 따라부르며 은혜받는 시작이었습니다. 찬양과 함께 자막에 나오는 가사는 아직도 마음과 귀에 맴돕니다. 그 찬양은 찬양의 하모니보다 더욱 값진 것은 주님을 향한 가사의 내용이었습니다. 우리가 이미 아는 찬양인데도 불구하고 다시 한번 주님께 고백하는 찬양의 내용!!
“주를 향한 나의 사랑을 주께 고백하게 하소서!
아름다운 주의 그늘 아래 살며, 주를 보게 하소서!
주님의 말씀 선포될 때에, 땅과하늘, 진동하리니.
나의 사랑, 고백하리라! 나의 구주, 나의친구!!!”
우리의 사랑되시고, 구주되시며, 친구 되시는 예수님 사랑합니다.
이 찬양을 시작으로 참여한 모든 교회 성가대, 찬양팀을 통해 앞으로 많은 뉴잉글랜드 지역의 교회들이 직접 대면으로 하지 못하더라도 이렇게 녹화 영상으로 하나가 되어 주님을 찬양하고 선교하고 나누는 시간을 가지면 좋겠습니다.

젊은이들의 참여로 더욱 발전적이고, 어른들의 깊은 마음으로 드리는 찬양, 다양함을 가진 찬양의 밤....악기와 성가의 하모니, 그리고 피아노 트리오, 피아노독주등 다양함을 통한 감사의 시간, 조용히 하나가 되는 귀한 시간이었습니다.

따뜻한 날씨를 주시고 함께 해주신 주님께 감사드리며, 모인 성도들 그리고 온라인으로 함께 해 주신 성도들 즐겁고도 감사한 마음으로 나누고 섬기는 너무나 좋은 시간.. 모두에게 행복한 시간이었으며, 앞으로 쉼 없이 매년 오로지 주님을 위한 찬양의 밤이 지속 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 감사합니다.

The 14th New England Conference KUMw Network Praise Night for Mission “Praise God with Thanksgiving”

This year's Praise Night was truly a joyous night of praise that ignited our desperate love, faith, and conviction for the Lord. Starting March 2020, all social activities were suspended—as well as worship services and volunteer work. The church choir could not sing praise for more than a year and a half, and service could only be held online! Since Sunday worship was online, if people wanted to give praise they could do it by sending pre-recorded videos as special music. Hence, this Praise Night was such a grateful time for choirs, families, young people, and middle and high school students coming together and quenching our thirst for the Lord.

The night started with the Rainbow Church’s "Just Let Me Say,” a song that all the saints gathered face-to-face were blessed as we sang to the lyrics together. I can still feel the song and the lyrics lingering in my heart and ears. The song was so precious for not just its melody but the lyrics of confession to the Lord. Though it is a familiar song to most of us, it was a praise confessing to our Lord once again!

Just let me say how much I love You
Let me speak of Your mercy and grace
Just let me live in the shadow of Your beauty
Let me see You face to face
And the earth will shake as Your word goes forth
And the heavens can tremble and fall
But let me say how much I love You
Oh my Savior my Lord and friend!

We love you Jesus, our love, our Lord and friend. Even though it’s hard to gather face-to-face altogether, I hope that many more churches in New England can be united through the recorded videos of the night that started off with this blessed song of praise, and have a time of praising the Lord, preparing and igniting our hearts for missions and sharing with one another.

The night was filled with gratitude through diversity that gently united all of us—it was progressive thanks to the young people’s participation, the adults’ sincere praise gave depth, and with various instrumentals and chorus, piano trios, and solo performances.

I thank the Lord for giving us nice, warm weather, and thank everyone who gathered both in-person and online. It was such a blessed time of sharing and serving with grateful hearts. It was a happy night for everyone, and I hope that this night of praise fully dedicated to the Lord could go on year after year without a break! Thank you!

2021년 제11회 선교걷기를 끝내고 나서

예년 같으면 메릴랜드 교회들과 함께 연합으로 장소를 바꿔가며 모여서 걷던 선교걷기가 올해는 지난 10월 10일 주일 오후에 각 교회별로 세 군데서 걸었다. 평생에 처음 겪는 코로나 팬데믹으로 예배 형식이며 우리의 일반적인 생활이 많이 바뀌었지만, 선교에 대한 열정은 식을 수가 없었다. 어떤 상황에서도 중단될 수 없는 하나님의 선교를 위한 연합회 임원들의 결정에 감사한다. 각 교회 성도들을 만나는 반가움은 없었지만, 이 선교걷기를 행함으로써 각 교회의 선교 불길이 다시 뜨겁게 피어나길 바란다. 선교와 전도에 대한 주님의 명령은 어떠한 상황, 변화, 환경에도 멈출 수가 없다.

또한 이렇게 모금 되는 선교 헌금이 코로나의 어려운 환경에서 애를 쓰시는 선교사님들에게 용기와 도움이 되길 간절히 기도한다.

우리 교회도 이번 선교걷기를 통해서 어려운 환경 속에서도 하나님의 사역을 계속하시는 선교지와 선교사님들에게 기도와 관심과 선교 헌금이 다시 불일 듯 일어나기 바란다.
‘그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게하라’ 는 마태복음 28:19-20의 말씀처럼 “선교는 예수님의 명령이다. 선교는 가는 것, 보내는 것, 그리고 나누는 것이다.

각자 받은 은사대로 걷기에 동참하는 행동파, 뒤에서 중보기도로 돕는 기도파, 김밥 만드는 것에 동참하는 장금이 음식파, 헌금으로 참가하는 많은 성도님… 하나님을 사랑하는 자들이 하나님의 뜻대로 부르심을 입어서 모든 것이 합력해서 (롬 8:28) 하나님의 선교를 이루어 내는 줄로 믿는다.
‘아자, 아자, 각 교회들이여!
같은 마음과 열정과 비전을 품고 다시 일어나라. 하나님의 선교를 위하여!
파이팅을 외치며 힘차게 걸었다.

The 11th Walk for Mission 2021

In the previous years, we used to hold the Walk for Mission with all Maryland churches gathered and walking altogether, with rotating locations. Whereas this year, we held the event by each church at three different locations on October 10th Sunday afternoon.

Although the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic has changed our worship service and daily lives, our passion for mission could not be cooled down. I thank the executives for their decision to hold the Walk for Mission, as no circumstance can stop God’s missions.

We missed the meet-and-greet part of interacting with different churches, but I hope that this Mission Walk would be a starting flame in burning up our fires for missions at each church level. The Lord's command for missions and evangelism cannot be stopped by any situation, change, nor environment.

Also, I sincerely pray that the mission offerings raised from this year’s Walk for Mission could assist and encourage our missionaries struggling amid the difficult situations due to COVID.

I also hope for our church that this Walk for Mission would ablaze our prayers, interests, and missions offerings for the mission fields and missionaries who continue God’s ministries in these difficult circumstances.

As Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” mission is a command by Jesus. Mission is an act of going, sending, and sharing.

All the beloved members who participated in the Walk for Mission each according to their gift:  those who came-in-action and participated in the walk, the prayer warriors who supported our backs with their intercession, those who served in making gimbap with their chef-talent, those who participated through giving … I believe that in all things God works for the good of us, we who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28)

‘Let’s keep it up, all the churches!
Let’s arise once again with the same heart, passion and vision, for God’s missions!’

These words echoed as we proclaimed them marching down.

남가주 연회 한인여선교회연합회 선교바자회를 마치고

할렐루야! 남가주 한인 연합감리교회 여선교회 연합회는 지난 9월 25일 가을 선교 바자를 가졌습니다. 우리가 여선교회 회의와 행사 때마다 늘 외워온 여선교회 목적문의 한 구절처럼, “교회의 세계 선교에 동참 ”하기 위해 펼쳐진 이번 바자회는, 11개의 교회가 참석하였으며 무려 39가지의 물건을 판매하였습니다. 

여러 교회의 사정을 고려하다 보니 오더를 받는 기간이 2주 밖에 되지 않아 안타깝게 참여할 수 없었던 교회들도 있었고, 참여하는 교회는 무척이나 분주했지만, 선교바자를 섬겨 주시는 임원들과 회원들의 자발적이고 적극적인 참여에 의해서 바자회가 비교적 순조롭게 진행되었습니다. 

남가주의 대규모 산불로 인해 애플 밸리에서 공급하는 매실액이 제대로 배달 올 수 있을지 바자회 하루 전 까지만 해도 불투명한 상황이었지만, 그로 인해서 임원들이 더 열심히 기도하며 준비하기도 했습니다.

주님의 은혜로 바자회 당일에 프리웨이가 다시 개통되어 아침에 무사히 배달이 와서 각 교회로 잘 배분되어 나갈 수 있었습니다. 아직 코로나의 여파로 인해 예년에 비해 조금 적은 판매와 수익이 있었습니다. 하지만 주님의 나라가 이 땅에 이뤄지는 그 일을 위해, 우리 남가주의 여선교회들은 함께 기도하며 준비하고 오더를 받아서 발주를 넣고,  물건을 제 날짜에 오더하신 각 회원들에게 나누는 그 일까지, 모두 하나되어 하나님의 사업을 이뤄갈 수 있었습니다. 

우리가 노력하고 애쓰는 작은 수고로써 하나님의 위대한 사업에 동참할 수 있는 가슴 벅찬 감사의 순간이었습니다. 

이번 행사를 위해 애써 주신 회장님을 비롯한 남가주의 모든 임원들과 각 교회에서 헌신 봉사하시는 개체교회의 임원들과 회원들께 감사드립니다. 또한,  모든 일을 아름답게 이뤄지시는 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다.

Cal-Pacific Conference KUMw Network Mission Bazaar

Hallelujah!
Our Cal-Pac Conference KUMw Network held the Fall Mission Bazaar on September 25th. The Bazaar was held in efforts to fulfill the phrase from UMW’s purpose statement—which we recite at every KUMw event and meeting—“To join the church’s world mission.” 11 churches participated in the bazaar and we sold 39 items. Considering the circumstances of all the churches, we only had a two-week period to receive the orders. Hence, there were some churches that unfortunately couldn’t participate, and the participating churches were kept very busy, but thanks to the active participation and volunteering of our executives and members who served in the Mission Bazaar, the event went smoothly.

We were experiencing some uncertainties even until the day before the bazaar, since we were worried whether the batches of plum juice supplied from Apple Valley could make the delivery due to the massive forest fires in the southern areas. Yet, the situation enabled our executives to pray and prepare even more wholeheartedly and passionately. By God’s grace, the freeway was reopened on the day of the bazaar and the supplies were delivered safely in the morning, so we were able to distribute all the items to each church. Although sales and profits were lower compared to previous years due to the aftermath of the pandemic, our Cal-Pac KUMw churches were united as one—as we prayed, prepared, received and checked orders together throughout the entire process, all for God’s Kingdom to come on earth. It was a moment of feeling thankful for being able to participate in God’s sovereign work of mission with our small efforts.

I express my gratitude to everyone for their contribution and dedication to this event—the chairwoman, executives of Cal-Pac Conference as well as all the executives and members of the churches in the conference. All glory to God who in all things works everything for good.

한인여선교회전국연합회에서는 환경선교의 일환으로 “녹색교회 만들기” 캠페인을 실시하고 있으며 매달 발행되는 뉴스레터에 환경에 관한 내용을 연재하고 있다.

기후 위기와 건강 위기로 인한 사회 불평등
세계적으로 유행된 코로나 19 대유행과 산불, 홍수, 가뭄, 태풍, 등으로 인해 전 세계적으로 기후 변화와 기후 위기에 관심이 높아져 가고 있다. 이제 기후 위기는 삶과 죽음의 문제이며, 사회 불평등을 증가시키는 정의 문제이며, 지구적인 문제가 되었기에 이에 대한 관심과 노력이 절실히 필요하다.
21세기의 기후 변화의 가장 큰 문제는 건강이다. 기후 변화는 우리가 살고 있는 사회의 모든 측면을 위협하며, 인간의 건강에 미치는 영향력이 점점 더 심각해 지고 있다. 그래서 기후 변화에 대한 노력이 지연되면 위험은 더 증가할 것이다. 2000년에서 2013년 사이에 폭염, 홍수, 산불, 폭풍과 같은 극단적인 기후 상황이 46%나 증가했다. 이러한 재난으로 인한 재산 손실과 사망, 호흡기계 질환, 심혈관계 질환의 증가 및 악화, 등은 기후변화로 인한 직접적 건강 영향이다. 기후 변화는 식량과 식수의 안전성을 위협하고, 기후에 민감한 감염병의 확산과 같은 생태학적 변화를 촉진하며, 인구 이동 및 보건의료 서비스에 대한 접근성 감소와 같은 사회문화적 변화를 초래하여 건강에 간접적 영향을 끼친다.
대기오염으로 인한 건강 영향은 간접적 영향 중 가장 큰 것이다. 전력, 운송 및 산업 발전을 위한 화석 연료 연소는 기후 변화를 주도하는 탄소 배출의 주범이며, 건강에 해로운 대기 오염의 주요 원인이다. 매년 대기오염으로 인해 전 세계 700만 명이 사망한다. 온실가스를 생산하는 주범은 미세먼지, 탄소 입자, 메탄, 오존 등 기타 대기 오염 물질을 생산하는 주범이기도 하다. 세계적으로 보았을 때, 기후 변화를 주도하는 온실가스 배출량은 전기와 열을 생산하기 위한 에너지 부문에서 34.6%, 농업 및 토지 이용에서 24%, 산업 부문에서 21%, 운송에서 14%를 차지한다.
기후 위기로 인한 먹거리 체계 변동도 심각하다. 일부 연구들에 따르면 지난 2년간 30개국의 곡물 생산량이 줄어들었다. 그뿐만 아니라 모든 지역에서 곡물 생산력이 줄어드는 추세이다. 천혜 자원의 보고라고 일컫는 수자원 생산량도 문제다. 해수면 온도 증가로 산호의 변색이 이루어지고 있는 것인 확인되고 있다. 이는 수자원 생산량의 감소로 이어질 것으로 많은 학자가 예측하고 있다. 이러한 먹거리 부족은 2050년까지 세계적으로 52만 9천 명이 추가 사망할 것으로 추측한다.
코로나 19 대유행에 따라 기후 위기와 감염병에 대한 관심이 증가했는데, 기후 변화는 감염병의 유행과 확산에 영향을 끼친다. 기후 위기와 관련이 있는 감염병은 크게 세 가지인데,
첫째, 극단적인 기후 상황이 늘어나면서 수질이 안 좋아져서 콜레라, 등의 수인성 감염병이 증가하고 있다. 둘째, 식중독, 등 먹거리와 관련된 감염병도 증가하고 있다.
마지막으로 코로나 19와 같은 인수공통 감염병, 말라리아, 뎅기열과 같은 곤충 매개성 감염병도 증가하고 있다. 곤충 매개성 감염병의 경우 평균 기온이 높아짐에 따라 이러한 곤충과 바이러스가 서식하고 감염시킬 수 있는 지역이 확대되고 있다. 인수공통 감염병은 이른바 ‘신종 감염병’에 해당하는데, 동물을 통해 사람에게 감염되는 감염병이다. 대부분 이 병은 치료제도 없고 백신도 없기에 더 치명적인 경우가 많다. 하지만 동물에게 흔한 바이러스가 사람에게까지 감염되는 경우는 많지 않고, 감염되더라도 가벼운 증상으로 끝나는 경우가 많다. 이러한 바이러스가 동물에서 사람에게까지 와서, 사람 사이에도 전파되는 경우는 더욱더 흔하지 않다. 하지만 여러 가지 이유로 이러한 낮은 확률을 가진 바이러스 변이가 최근 더 자주 발생하고 있고, 그 결과 코로나 19 유행과 같은 사태에 직면하게 되었다.
신종 감염병 유행과 기후 위기 역시 같은 사회 생태적 원인에 의한 두 가지 결과로 보는 것이 이해하기 쉽다. 신종 감염병 유행의 사회 생태적 원인으로 거론되는 것은 도시화, 세계화, 토지 이용의 변화, 육류 생산 밀도의 증가, 국가 간 여행의 증가, 등인데, 이 모든 것은 기후 위기의 원인이기도 하다. 세계보건기구는 기후 변화로 인한 직접 간접적 건강 영향으로 인해 2030년부터 2050년 사이에 해마다 25만 명이 추가 사망할 것으로 추측하였다. 이는 폭염으로 인한 노인 사망, 설사, 말라리아, 뎅기열, 등 감염병의 증가로 인한 사망, 해수 범람으로 인한 사망, 아동 영양실조로 인한 사망, 등만 포함된 것이다. 세계은행에서도 기후 변화로 2030년까지 전 세계 인구 1억 명 이상이 극단적인 빈곤 상태로 내몰릴 것으로 예측하였다.
모든 사람이 기후 변화의 영향을 받지만 가난한 사람들과 취약한 사람들이 가장 큰 해를 입는다. 저개발국은 온실가스 배출에 가장 적게 기여했음에도 불구하고 해당 국가 국민들은 가장 큰 타격을 입을 것으로 예상된다. 경제, 환경 및 사회적 요인으로 인해 불평등 문제가 발생한다. 가난하거나, 충분히 교육받지 못하거나, 권리가 박탈되거나 침해받는 이들이 기후 변화로 더 큰 해를 입는다. 기후 변화의 결과로 발생하는 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 이러한 불평등 문제를 해결하는 것이 중요하다. 아이, 노인, 여성 등이 기후 변화로 인한 건강 영향에 더욱 취약하다.
기후 변화는 여전히 진행 중이며, 인간 건강에 미치는 부정적인 영향은 계속 증가하고 있는데, 반해서 인간의 대응은 늦어지고 있다. 기후 변화를 해결하는데 가장 큰 장벽은 기술적인 것이 아니라 사회적인 것이다. 개인적 선택과 행동 차원의 실천도 중요하지만, 더욱 중요한 것은 정치적, 사회적으로 공동의 목표를 설정하고 이를 관철하기 위한 집단적 실천이 필요하다. 탄소 중립을 위해 정부에 화석연료에서 재생에너지로 에너지 생산 체계를 변경하자고 요구해야 한다. 걷기, 자전거 타기가 안전하고 편안한 도시로 만들 것을 요구해야 한다. 개인 승용차보다는 대중교통 위주의 도로 교통 체계를 요구해야 한다. 자동차 배출가스 기준을 더 엄격히 할 것을 요구해야 한다. 붉은 고기 섭취 줄이기, 가공식품 섭취 줄이기, 무공해 농산물 섭취, 등 건강하고 지속가능한 먹거리로의 전환을 우리들이 실천해야 한다. 이러한 우리들의 요구와 실천을 통해서 우리는 희망이 있는 미래를 맞이할 수 있다.

Social Injustices Caused by Climate Crisis and Health Crisis.

There is a growing surge of interest on climate change and climate crisis that is increasing around the world due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, as well as forest fires, floods, droughts, typhoons, etc. Now the climate crisis is a global issue as a matter of life and death, a matter of justice that worsens social injustice issues, thus it desperately needs more attention and effort more than ever.

The 21st century’s biggest problem that comes with climate change is the issue of health. Climate change threatens all aspects of our society, and its consequence on human health is becoming more and more serious. Therefore, more delay in efforts on climate change will further increase the risk and damage. Between 2000 and 2013, extreme climate conditions such as heatwaves, floods, forest fires, and storms increased by 46%. Increasing and worsening property loss and death from such disasters, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases are health effects directly caused from climate change. Climate change threatens the stability of food and drinkable water, stimulates ecological variations such as the spread of climate-sensitive infectious diseases, and causes socio-cultural changes such as population migration and reduced access to health care services, which are also indirect factors affecting human health.

Among the indirect effects, the health impact due to air pollution is the leading health consequence from climate change. Fossil fuel combustion for power, transportation, and industrial development is the main culprit in carbon emissions that drive climate change and is a major cause of harmful air pollution. Air pollution kills 7 million people worldwide every year. The main culprit for producing greenhouse gases is also the production of other air pollutants such as fine dust, carbon particles, methane, and ozone. Globally, greenhouse gas emissions leading climate change account for 34.6% in the energy sector to produce electricity and heat, 24% in agricultural and land use, 21% in the industrial sector, and 14% in transportation.

Changes in the food system due to the climate crisis are also becoming worse. According to some studies, grain production in 30 countries has decreased over the past two years. In addition, grain productivity is decreasing in all regions. Water resource production, which is called a treasure trove of natural resources, is also a problem. It has been confirmed that coral discoloration is taking place due to the increase in sea level temperature. Many scholars predict that this will lead to a decrease in water resource production. This food shortage estimates that 529,000 more people will die worldwide by 2050.

Interest in the climate crisis and infectious diseases has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change affects the epidemic and spread of infectious diseases. There are three rising major infectious diseases related to the climate crisis: first, waterborne infectious diseases such as cholera––as water quality deteriorates with extreme climate conditions. Second, food-related infectious diseases such as food poisoning. Finally, common infectious diseases such as COVID-19, and insect-borne infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.

In the case of insect-borne infectious diseases, as the average temperature rises, areas where these insects and viruses can inhabit and infect are expanding. Common infectious diseases fall under the category of "new infectious diseases" and are infectious diseases that are transmitted to humans from animals. In most cases, this disease is more fatal because there is no cure and no vaccine. However, viruses, which are common to animals, are not often infected to humans, and even if they are infected, they often end up with mild symptoms. It is even more uncommon for these viruses to come from animals to humans and spread between humans. Yet, somehow these low-probability viral mutations have occurred more frequently in recent years, and as a result, we are facing situations like this COVID-19 pandemic.

It is easy to understand that the epidemic of new infectious diseases and the climate crisis are also seen as two consequences of the same social and ecological causes. Social and ecological causes of the new infectious disease epidemic include urbanization, globalization, changes in land use, increased meat production density, increased travel between countries, etc., all of which are also the causes of the climate crisis. The World Health Organization estimated that an additional 250,000 people would die annually between 2030 and 2050 due to direct and indirect health effects from climate change. This includes deaths of the elderly from heatwaves, deaths from increased infectious diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, dengue fever, deaths from seawater flooding, deaths from child malnutrition, etc. The World Bank also predicted that climate change will drive more than 100 million people around the world to extreme poverty by 2030.

Everyone is affected by climate change, but it is the poor and vulnerable populations who suffer the most. Although underdeveloped countries have contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions, they are expected to be hit the hardest.  The problem of inequality arises due to economic, environmental, and social factors. Those who are poor, not sufficiently educated, or whose rights are deprived or infringed, suffer most from climate change. In order to solve the problems arising from climate change, it is important to solve these injustices. Children, the elderly, and women are more vulnerable to the health consequences of climate change.

Climate change is still ongoing and its negative impact on human health continues to increase; meanwhile, our responses to it are getting severely delayed. The biggest barrier to solving climate change is social, not technical. Individual practice and actions are also important, but more importantly, collective practice is necessary in order to establish and carry out common goals politically and socially. For carbon neutrality, the government should be asked to change its energy production system from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Walking and cycling should be demanded to make it a safe and comfortable city. A road transportation system emphasizing public transportation rather than private cars should be mandated. Automobile emission policies should be demanded to impose stricter standards. We should practice the transition to healthy and sustainable food, such as reducing red meat intake, reducing processed food intake, and consuming pollution-free agricultural products.

Through these demands and practices, we can face a hopeful tomorrow.

내가 참여한 아이티 선교

펜데믹으로 모든 것이 중단된 이때에 아이티 선교를 하러간다고 하니까 친구들과 식구들이 반대를 했다. 그러나 나의 마음속에는 2년 전 아이티 고아사역 때 본 아이가 무척 생각이 나고 그때 기도할 때 성령이 역사하셔서 같이 사역을 하던 팀이 울면서 아이티를 위해 기도하던 모습을 2년 동안 가슴에 품고 기도하며 그 뜨거운 열정을 가지고 있었다. 나는 26년 전 교통사고로 3주 동안 혼수상태(COMA)로 지내며 모든 것이 마비된 상태에서 1년 동안 재활을 위해 치료하며 새 생명을 주신 하나님께 감사했다.
그래서 덤으로 생명을연장시켜주신 하나님께 ‘의미있는 삶을 사는 게 무엇인가’ 기도 중에 자비량 선교사로 인류의 문명이 못 미친 곳과 열약한 곳을 찾아 다니며 선교 사역을 감당하고 있다. 이번에 아이티를 오는데 뉴 잉글랜드연회 한인여선교회연합회와 지인들이 선교헌금을 해 주셨다. 나는 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지 알 수가 없어 선교헌금을 받아 가지고 기도를 하고 아이티에 도착했을 때 왜 하나님이 선교헌금을 지인을 통해 준비 시키는지 알 수 있었다.

2년전 제가 사역을 마치고 얼마 안되어 City solie Love & Hope Jesus mission center에 갱들이 싸움하여 교회는 물론, 병원, 유치원부터 중학교 건물, 증축 중인 신학교와 음악학교, 고아들을 위해 만드는 빵 공장까지 다 점령당했다.
옆에 경찰서도 갱들이 경찰의 총들도 다 빼앗았고 경찰도 세 명이나 죽었다고 한다. 경찰서도 폐쇄되고 Ciry Solie 사람들에게 총을 쏴 많은 사람이 죽고 지금은 그 도시는 사람이 살지 못하고 풀만 무성한 황폐한 도시가 되었다. City Solie는 아이티에서 가장 험악하고 무서운 도시다.
나는 그 소식을 듣고 너무나 충격적이고 일주일 동안 내 마음을 다스릴 수가 없었다. 그런 가운데 김승돈 선교사님은 얼마나 힘드시고 쓰레기장을 치워 가며 세 번의 죽음의 고비를 넘기며 사역을 한 곳인데 왜 가슴이 안 아프실까…. 그러나 내가 봤을 때 초연해 하시며 마음의 평정을 가지시는 모습을 보고 마음 깊은 곳에서부터 존경심이 생겼다. 그러니 전능자이신 하나님이 이 상황을 보고만 계시지 않으시리라 믿는다.

새벽 4시 반이면 150여 명이 모여 기도하던 사람들이 다 사라졌다. 기도를 하면서 성령의 역사와 치유의 역사를 경험한 사람들이 가장 험악하고 무서워하던 ciry solie에 살던 사람들이었다. 디아스포라처럼 곳곳으로 흩어졌다. 어디를 가던 무섭고 험악한 도시에 살던 사람들의 90%가 기독교인이 되었다. 이들은 city solie에 살던 것을 부끄러워 하지 않고, 흩어져 디아스포라처럼 복음을 마음 속에 간직한 채 다른 마을 사람들과 함께 어울려 복음을 전하며 살아가고 있다는 사실 앞에 하나님의 섬세하고 위대한 분이시며 오늘도 아이티를 위해 일하고 계심을 알게 하셨다.

고아 사역을 한 후 이틀째 건강하던 나에게 오른쪽 가슴 밑에 신장이 붓고 통증이 왔다. 사역도 못 마치고 미국으로 돌아가야 하나 기도를 했다. 사탄은 나를 아프게 하면서 고아사역을 방해 했다. 여호와 라파 치유의 하나님 하는데 나도 모르게 눈물을 흘렸다. 12일 동안 통증이 많이 좋아져 한 달 사역을 채우고 돌아갈 수 있어 함께 하시는 하나님께 감사했다. 배고픈 아이들에게 줄 카레를 자그마치 3박스(75LB)를 가지고 와서 고아원을 방문할 때 카레라이스를 만들어 30명분 이상을 만들어 갔다. 2년 전에는 50명분을 만들었는데.. 고아원마다 아이들이 준 것 같았다. 카레라이스를 만들 때 아이티 날씨가 100도 정도 되니까 땀이 흘러 옷이 땀에 다 젖고, 땀이 눈으로 들어가 눈을 뜰 수가 없었다. 고아원 방문 때 아이들 머리도 깎아 주면서 다 깎은 아이들에게 사탕을 주고 풍선 게임도 하고 아이들과 재미있게 놀았다. 식사 전에 성경을 암송하고 식사를 하게 하는 김 선교사님의 신앙교육과 말씀 사역으로 고아원 아이들이 잘 자라고 있는 것 같았다. 아이들을 사랑하시는 선교사님은 아이들에게 태권도와 합기도를 가르치고, 고아원마다 악기를 가르쳐 각각 고아원이 모여 연주를 하게 하신다. 한글과 영어도 열심히 가르쳐 제자 양육에 애쓰신다. 꿈을 심어 주시려고 열심히 가르치신다.

전도 폭발 세미나를 하면서 제자화 양육과 전도를 하게 하시며 전도자의 삶을 가르치며 집, 집마다 방문하여 복음을 전도하게 하신다. 많은 선교 단체와 NGO 단체들이 아이티에 와 많은 도움을 주고 있다.

정부는 힘이 없고 갱들이 힘이 더 세니 불법이 너무나 난무하게 판을 친다. 주유소가 있지만, 기름이 없어 불법으로 파는 데서만 기름을 살 수 있으니 그 가격은 실제 가격보다 세 배 혹은 네 배 비싸니 서민들의 삶은 이루 말할 수 없을 정도로 힘들고 삶에 지쳐 있다. 한 때 한인 선교사가 50여 명 있었는데 지금은 다 떠나고 20명 정도 남아 사역을 하신다고 한다. 크레올( Kreyol)언어를 하지 못하는 선교사는 현지인에게 당하면서 사역을 하시니 속는 줄 알면서도 일을 시켜야 하는 현실을 보니 너무 가슴이 아프다. 크레올(kreyol) 언어를 하시는 분이 김승돈 선교사님 한 분인 것 같다. 얼마나 많은 문제가 산재해 있는지, 왜 세계인의 눈이 아이티를 향하고 있는지, 이 현실을 보며 예수님의 사랑의 마음을 가진 사람은 기도하며 사랑의 손길을 보내야 한다. 오늘도 아이티를 위해 정치적, 경제적으로 안정되어 배고픔이 사라지고 꿈이 있는 나라가 되기를 기도드립니다.

My Participation in the Haiti Mission

When I told my friends and family that I’d be going to Haiti for missions, they all opposed the thought of going at this time when everything is suspended due to the pandemic. Yet, I went ahead; I often remembered the child I saw back in the Haiti orphan ministry two years ago, and I had cherished the memory of the Holy Spirit working amidst us then when our ministry team all prayed for Haiti with tears. With such passion, I arrived in Haiti.

26 years ago, I had a severe accident that put me in a state of coma for three weeks. I spent a year in rehabilitation and recovery, thanking God for giving me a new life. I prayed, asking, “How can I live a meaningful life for God, who has given me an extra life?” The answer I found was in missions ministries reaching out to underprivileged and unreached places, which I have been doing since then.

As I was leaving for Haiti, the New England Conference KUMw members and my acquaintances handed their missions offering to me. I did not know what God had in store for the missions offering, so I received the money, prayed for it and arrived at Haiti. Upon arrival, I was able to realize why God’s hands had prepared the missions offering through them.

Two years ago, shortly after I had finished with my mission trip, a gangster fight arose at the City Solie Love & Hope Jesus Mission Center, occupying the church, hospital, kindergarten to middle school buildings, the seminary school and music school still under construction, including the bread factory that used to bake bread for the orphans. The nearby police station was stripped of all their police guns, and three officers were killed.

With the police station shut down, City Solie suffered from lots of civilian deaths from the gangster fight. The incident made the city desolate and inhabitable. It is known as the most dangerous city in Haiti. Hearing such news, I was so shocked and could not calm myself for a week. How troubled and heartbroken Missionary Seungdon Kim must be; the place was his mission field where he went through garbage piles in efforts to make the area clean, where he almost died three times. Yet seeing his calm, tranquil attitude, I felt a deep respect for him.

But I have faith: that the Almighty and Sovereign God is not just going to stand by. Over 150 people who used to gather to pray every 4:30am early morning are now all gone. Having experienced the Holy Spirit and healing through their prayers, they were the ones living in City Solie, the city that everyone was scared of just hearing it. They have all scattered and dispersed like a diaspora. 90% of the city residents became Christians. They are not ashamed of their background of having lived in City Solie, they are still embracing the gospel in their hearts, sharing the good news to others in their new towns. This shows that God is such a detailed, all-powerful God and that He is working for Haiti even today.

After the orphan mission, I was in good health until two days after. I started to have swells and pain under my right chest. I prayed if I should go back to the U.S. without finishing the ministry.

Satan interfered with the orphan ministry by hurting me. Tears fell from my eyes, while I cried for God’s name, Jehovah Rapha God Who Heals. The pain subsided and I got a lot better for the next 12 days, and I was thankful that God was with me and that I could complete the ministry for one month as planned.

I brought three boxes filled with 75 lbs of curry to cook and feed around 30 hungry children whenever I would visit the orphanages. I used to make 50 servings two years ago; there seemed to be fewer children in the orphanages than before.

Whenever I cooked the curry, I was drenched in sweat; the sweat soaked my clothes and went inside my eyes that I couldn’t open them in the 100 degree scorching heat. I also gave a haircut to the children, gave them candies after the haircut, played balloon games and had fun with them. The children seemed to grow up well spiritually, as Missionary Kim had them memorize and recite Bible verses before each meal. He loves the children so much, he teaches them Taekwondo and Hapkido as well as musical instruments to let the orphanages have concerts. He also strives in disciple education, by passionately teaching them Korean and English. He teaches wholeheartedly to plant dreams inside of them. He leads evangelism seminars, trains the disciples and the way of life as an evangelist, and has them visit home to home to deliver the good news.

Various mission organizations and NGOs come to Haiti to help. The government is powerless since the gangsters have much more power than them—causing corruption everywhere. There is a gas station but they have no gas, so people have to resort to places that sell gas illegally for 3-4 times higher than the actual price. The common people’s life is so difficult and distressed. Once there used to be over 50 Korean missionaries, but most of them have left and only around 20 people have remained. It is heartbreaking to hear that missionaries who cannot speak the Kreyol language have to do their ministries fooled and sometimes taken advantage of their inability to speak the local language by the locals. Missionary Seungdon Kim appears to be the only missionary who can speak Kreyol.

Those with the heart of Jesus must see how much problems are present in Haiti, why the global community pays attention to Haiti, and must send love and a helping hand to Haiti. I pray for political, economic stability for Haiti, that hunger no longer becomes an issue for Haiti, and that Haiti becomes a nation with dreams.

"사랑이어라"

사랑을 배울 수만 있었다면 우리는 다 그 비싼 학원에라도 가서 열심히 배웠으련만.. 우리 모두는 제대로 배우지 못해서 서툴렀고 당황했고 많이 아프게 했음으로 더 많이 아팠다. 사랑을 막 시작했다는 이유만으로 생각보다 자주 슬퍼해야 했고 퍼렇게 잠 못 이루는 그 밤의 깊은 미움은 낯설고 질긴 것이었다. 분노조차 사랑의 같은 말이라는 것을 알게 되었던 것은 차마 머리를 세차게 흔들어야 할 만큼 인정하기 어려웠으며 그럴 때마다 눈물로 그 사랑을 후회한 일 역시 사랑을 시작하기 전에는 절대로 바라고 상상했던 일은 아니였다.
예상과는 한결 다르게 우리가 붙잡았던 사랑에 더 깊이 빠질수록 그 사랑은 오래 참기가 어려웠으며 우리의 사랑은 필연 이기적이었던 적이 더 많았으며 나의 사랑은 얼마나 그토록 오만하고 알량한 자존심으로 무례한 상처를 남겼던지.
그 벌겋게 가슴 속에 달아오른 질투가 시기하여 말했던 작정 된 거짓말들은 또 얼마나 선명하게 스스로에게 돌아온 뼈아픈 양심의 가책이 되었던가..
사랑은 그러므로 사과를 깎던 칼끝에 설마 손가락이 베인 것처럼 아니 어쩌면 눈이 찔렸던 것과 같아서 그때 그 어느 모르는 아무나라도 붙잡고 울면서 말했으리라..
사랑은 차라리 잔인한 고통이었다고..
그럼에도 불구하고 이상하고 또 당연한 말이지만,
우리는 누군가를 사랑하는 것이 가만히 아무도 사랑하지 않는 살아있음 보다는 비교할 수 없는 인생의 위대한 축복이었다는 것을 결국 깊이 깨닫게 되었다.
사랑하면서 우리는 우리의 가식적인 인생의 무가치함 속에서 사람과 사랑의 진정한 가치와 고귀함을 알게 되었다. 사랑하다가 우리는 우리가 흘리는 눈물의 온도가 얼마나 뜨거운가와 그 눈물이 녹여낸 얼어버린 마음의 문들과 자책과 한숨들을 더욱 가엾게 여기게 되었으며 사랑함으로 비로소 한 영혼의 고통과 설움의 깊고 푸른 숲에도 따뜻한 빛이 스며듬을 보게 되었으며 사랑을 했기에.. 어쩌면 버려지고 말았을 모든 병든 인생의 한가운데에는 의외로 숨겨진 작은 병원과 약국이 거기 그렇게 있었다는 것을 발견하고 더블어 함께 기뻐하게 되었음이다.
사랑하는 동안에..
모든 것이 서툴고 고통스러웠으나 그 가운데 우리를 붙잡아 준 것도 오히려 사랑 그 자체였으며… 사랑하는 동안에 견딜 수 없는 배신과 분노의 불길을 맨발로 지나갈 때에도 오히려 우리를 더 높은 성숙의 언덕으로 이끈 것 역시 우리의 서툴렀던 그 사랑이었다.
사랑하면서 우리는 진실에 대하여 순결에 대하여 더 많은 지혜를 말하게 되었으며 그럴수록 사랑은 더 가까이 우리를 그에게로 불러 주었다.
사랑하면서 낙심했건만 사랑은 그러나 항상 우리에게는 그 낙심의 반대말이 되어주었다. 사랑하면서 비판과 모함을 받았으되 그것들이 또한 우리의 사랑을 더 오롯이 반짝거리게 해주었다.
사랑은 한편 초라하고 모욕을 뒤집어썼으나 온갖 아름답고 선한 동기를 이룰 수 있는 용기들로 인하여 우리의 긍지에 꽃을 안겨주었다.
그렇게 용서할 수 있었다.
그렇게 축복하며 웃어 줄 수 있었다.
사랑은 항상 여기에 있어 주었다.
사랑은 그렇게 세상의 모든 것들의
이야기이다. 하나님의 이야기이다.
세상이 사랑에 대하여 무엇이라고 말하든지 사랑은 오늘도 세상을 향하여 설레이고 있다.
사랑하여라..

It is Always Love

If only love was something that could be learned,
We would enroll in classes to study how to love the “right way”
How clumsy and nervous were we not knowing how to love right;
How hurt and painful were we from the pain we had caused.

We never expected in the beginning that loving someone would come with frequent sadness,
Not to mention the unfamiliar, tough sleepless nights of deep hatred.

How unbearably difficult it was to admit that anger was the same word for love
Nor did we imagine the buckets of tears that would be shed—filled with tears of regret
Such a tearful moment was never something we had hoped and imagined before starting love.

Far contrary to our expectations, the deeper the love had become,
The harder it was to practice patience for its sake
Our love became inevitably selfish
Leaving us with impudent scars due to my haughty heart and arrogant ego.
The strikingly vivid, painful guilt from the lies blurted out of jealousy…

Hence, love is like an accident
An accident of having one’s finger cut by the sharp edge of a fruit knife
Or having one’s eye poked
An accident that hurts so much that we would have grabbed any passer-by to cry aloud,
‘Oh! Love is rather a cruel pain!’

Nevertheless, how strange yet so obvious it is to say that
To love someone is an incomparable, greatest blessing in life
So much worth it than doing nothing and not loving anyone.

Thanks to love, we have come to understand
The true worth of humanity, the true value of love in this meaningless life
Thanks to love, we experienced how hot and passionate our tears can be
Thanks to love, we came to pity the fastened doors of our frozen hearts, self-blame and groan
Which would all be warmed and melted by our tears of love.

Thanks to love, we saw a warm ray of light finally enter and permeate the deep forest of pain and sorrow of one soul
Thanks to love, we found the hidden hospitals and pharmacies amid our distressed and diseased lives that would otherwise have been abandoned,

While in love...
Despite all the clumsiness and pain caused by love,
It was love itself that held us tight in the midst of it all
It was that clumsy love that led us to reach the hill of maturity
Out of the unbearable flames of betrayal and anger that we would walk barefoot.

As we loved, we spoke more wisdom about purity, about the truth
And love pulled us closer to Him more and more
As we loved, we got discouraged
But love became the opposite of distress for us.
While in love, we were criticized and framed
But they made our love sparkle even more.

For times love was ragged and insulted,
But with the courage to fulfill all kinds of beautiful and good-intended motives,
Love clothed our dignity with flowers.

It enabled us to forgive.
It enabled us to smile and bless others.

Love was always here for us.
Love is a story of all the things in the world throughout history.
It is His story––a story of God.

No matter what the world says about love,
Love shines its face towards the world ever brightly today.

로마서에 2절 짧게 기록된 뵈뵈. 겐그레아 교회의 일꾼 , 보호자, 필요한 것을 도와주라는 기록을 되새김질하며 저자는 우리들을 초대교회 시대로 초청하여 상상의 날개를 피고  성경 문학  창조의 세계로 인도한다.
주인공 뵈뵈는 바울이 쓴 로마에 있는 성도들에게 쓴 편지를 가지고 로마에 도착해서 브리스가와 만나고 바울이 부탁한 스페인 선교 준비를 하게된다.
이러면서 뵈뵈가 로마에 온 또 다른 이유가 점차 의식세계로 떠오른다. 전쟁 노예로 잡혀와 티투스 귀족집에서 생활하며 만난 퀸투스 사이에서 난 딸을 찾고 싶은 무의식 본능이 그를 로마로 이끌었다는.
폭행으로 죽음의 문턱에서 그를 구해준 크리스투수와 결혼하고 노예 신분에서 자유인이 되는 스토리 속에서 새사람으로 옷 입는, 새로운 피조물이 되는 감격이 어떤 것인지 독자도 느끼게 된다.
또한 고대 로마 사회에서 흔히 시행되던 입양도, 노예가 주인에게 입양되면 일순간의 신분 상승과 상속자로 부를 누리게 된다.  우리가 하나님의 자녀로 입양되는, 그래서 상속자가 되는 것이 책 속에서 생생하게 살아있는 사실로 감동으로 다가온다.
뵈뵈를 자켜주지 못한 티투스의 회한, 외로움,  두려움이 에베소에서 복음에 영혼의 문을 연다. 회심, 세례 그리고 섬기는 삶을 통해 이 땅의 귀족에서 천상의 시민이 된다.
절대적인 하나님의 주권과 경륜과 섭리로 뵈뵈는 피붙이 딸의 딸, 손녀 비비를 만나게 되고, 바울을 대신해  스페인 선교를 떠나는  성경에 기반한  아름다운 소설같은 이야기다.
저자의 친절한 안내로 우리는 초대 교회 1세기 기독교인들의 삶 속에 들어가 함께 울고 웃으며, 복음으로 새로운 삶을 살아내는 격변기 시대 성도들의 진솔한 신앙으로 도전받는 귀한 책이다.

Book Recommendation

Title: Phoebe A Story
Author: Paula Gooder

Phoebe is briefly mentioned for two verses in the book of Romans. Deliberating on the records about her information regarding serving the Cenchreae Church, being a guardian, and helping out with unmet needs, the author invites us to spread our wings of imagination to embark on a creative, fictional Biblical literature journey to the early church era.

The book’s protagonist Phoebe arrives in Rome with a letter written by Paul addressed to the saints in Rome. She meets Prisca and prepares for the mission journey to Spain as requested by Paul.

As the plot develops, another reason why Phoebe came to Rome gradually emerges to the stream of consciousness—that her unconscious instinct to search for her child, a daughter she had with Quintus, whom she met at Titus noble house where she lived as a war slave—had led her to Rome.

As we read her dramatic story of marrying Christus, who saves her from near death from abuse, and becoming a free woman from a slave status, the readers can feel the emotions of being clothed again as a new person and new creation.

It was a common practice in the ancient Roman society that when a slave would be adopted by an owner, he or she would experience a dramatic rise of status and wealth, having become the heir. The book vividly touches us with the truth that we become heirs of God as we are adopted as His children.

The regret, fear, and loneliness of Titus, who had failed to protect Phoebe, opens him up to the gospel in Ephesus. Through repentance, baptism, and life of service—from being a nobility on this earth he becomes the heavenly citizen of God’s Kingdom.

The book is a beautiful tale based on the Bible about Phoebe, who through God’s sovereign, governing, providing hands meets her granddaughter Bibi, and takes off her mission journey to Spain in Paul’s place.

The author kindly introduces and guides her readers into the lives of early church believers in the 1st century to cry and laugh along with the characters. It is a book that inspires and challenges us through the testimonies of faith by the believers during the period of upheaval who live out a new life through the gospel.

This year marks 30 years of history since KUMW was organized and started participating in mission work. Since then, we have been holding leadership training for our KUMW members as well as our daughters, second-generation Korean women. Moreover, we have been learning, sharing and growing together through holding leadership training for UMW women in Asia.
Our seniors of faith have trained lay female leaders under the vision of "Women help fellow women to make a better future,” continuing to write the history of great women mission with offerings, prayers and dedication.
