 제5회 학당에 참여하고
The fifth Mission Virtual School of this year was an opportunity to learn about what kinds of missions the United Methodist women missionaries did in Korea, the roots of the Korean UMW Network, and what results and fruits they bore. Since history is about connecting the past and the present as well as preparing for the future, we were able to discover our identity through learning the flow of the early UMW in the past. As we learned about our noble ancestors of faith, we were also greatly touched by the sweat of dedication, passion, and sacrifice of the early missionaries who suffered through the wearying and dejected times. Thanks to their dedication and service, we are now able to do missions in such a comfortable environment, enjoying the fruits of their missions. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, (Luke 4:18)” How dare we comprehend all the adversity and hardships they must have gone through in the early Korean society that they put themselves in simply holding onto a single ray of light of the gospel, in such a difficult situation in which they had trouble even communicating? How many people must have disappeared without leaving a name? How can we even reckon the struggles of building a school and establishing a hospital? Nevertheless, the very faith of those pioneers—that inherited the will of Jesus Christ for the underprivileged in society, reached out to them to be together with them through their life of action—is our valuable inheritance built on blood and sweat. I am so thankful for the pioneers for sending the evangelist women, sending missionaries from far abroad, and establishing our dormant and neglected social status back then as women, for all the efforts including the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement and the National Liberation Movement, and for all the efforts to promote equality and peace. We are deeply grateful to Mary Scranton, Rosetta Hall Family, Josephine Campbell, Bible Woman Samduk Jun, and all those without a name, for their love and dedication to open up the doors to missions. As a debtor of all their missions, I do feel quite a heavy burden on my shoulders about what we should encompass in this generation. Thank you to the professor who led us to such a vital education through in-depth research, and I pray that we would be able to practice the right choices and challenges in our lives by learning from history—a mirror of the future—and, I pray that we would live a righteous, mission-driven life so that our existence itself will be a mission. As inheritors of the faith of our seniors, I express my heartfelt gratitude and respect for those who are igniting the fire of hope for the neglected children, women, and youth around the world through evangelism, prayers, offering, time, and talent even as we go through these hard pandemic times. | 뉴욕 연회 한인여선교회연합회 임원회와 임원수련회
임원회 시작 전에는 김명래 전도사(영성 부장)의 인도로 “자연 생태계와 신약성서”라는 제목으로 성경 공부가 있었다. 성경 공부 내용은 현재 한인여선교회전국연합회가 실시하고 있는 녹색교회 만들기에 왜 우리가 참여해야 하는지에 대해 생각해 보았다. 하나님이 창조하신 자연과 생태계에 대해서 함부로 취급하고 착취하고 파괴하는 행위를 멈추어야 하며, 생태계의 입장에서 성경해석을 다시 해 보아야 한다는 내용이었다. 성경 공부를 마치고 뉴욕연합회에서는 2022년 새 선교사역으로 환경선교를 하기로 결정하였다. 우리가 사용하는 한인 마트에 플라스틱 사용을 중지해 달라는 청원서를 보내며, 교회에 환경 살리기 포스터를 배부하며, 교회 친교에서 플라스틱 용품을 사용하지 않으며, 개인의 컵, 수저 세트를 가지고 다니기를 권면하기로 하였다.
The New York Conference KUMw Network gathered last Saturday, November 13th at President Hyeyoon Han’s house for an executives’ meeting. This executive meeting was the last executive meeting for this year, and it consisted of mission ministry evaluations, end-of-year finance report, and planning for the next mission ministry in 2022. Prior to the start of the meeting, Myungrae Lee (Spiritual Growth coordinator) led a Bible Study titled " Ecosystem and the New Testament." The Bible study explored why we must participate in NNKUMw’s undergoing ‘Creating Green Churches Project.’ It taught us that we must stop the act of recklessly treating, exploiting, and destroying nature and ecosystem created by God, and that we must interpret the Bible once again from the standpoint of the ecosystem. After the Bible study, our Conference Network decided to initiate environmental missions as our new mission ministry in 2022. Our ideas included: sending a petition to our local Korean marts to stop using plastic, distribute save-the-environment within the churches, not using plastic supplies at church fellowships, and encouraging the practice of carrying personal cups and utensils. In particular, our end-of-the-year account review conducted by our treasurer revealed that we had some remaining budget even aftersending the mission pledge to NNKUMw. Traditionally, our New York Conference KUMw Network spends all the missionary expenses collected that year, leaving only the administrative expenses for the first event following the year. To follow this tradition, we decided to send additional funds to support the Prison Book Ministry and Usotobe, • Supporting undocumented single mothers of the Sanctuary Church who are facing rent issues. More than 80 Korean churches in the United States are participating, mainly in New York, New Jersey, and Chicago. Under the motto of "God is our refuge (Psalm 14:1),” the main objective of the mission is to become a refuge for Korean immigrants, especially trying to provide legal aid for the undocumented Koreans living in the United States and their children (DACA Dreamers). In addition, among those undocumented are Korean single mothers and their children who are on the verge of eviction due to their inability to pay rent. The New York Conference KUMw Network supported the rent fees as our mission offering.
In New York, there are Koreans who have become homeless due to financial struggles from failed business, as well as family divisions/conflicts. Upon hearing that the Nanoom House, that provided a shelter for the Korean homeless to live, was in trouble of having move due to the expiration of their rental period, the New York Conference KUMw Network visited the Nanoom House and handed them our mission offering to support their efforts to provide a homeless shelter.

북가주 연회 한인여선교회연합회 “가을 바자회”를 마치고
Shalom! The presidents and UMW members from 10 churches devotedly ordered a lot of items to raise funds for missions. Sesame oil, perilla oil, beef jerky, Canadian clean bracken, pine mushrooms, black garlic acorn noodles, sweet potatoes, etc. These healthy foods will now fill our tables. In particular, the local sweet potatoes from Fresno were very popular. I would like to thank Rev. Kyu Hyun Kim and Rev. Joseph Kwon and Pastor Kwon of Berkeley Korean United Methodist Church for picking up the 300 boxes of sweet potatoes immediately after early morning service and touching all our KUMW members. I would also like to express my gratitude to Pastor Hyuk-in Kwon of Santa Clara UMC for providing us the location to host the bazaar every year. Every moment was God’s grace, along with the leadership of President Mikey Choi of Cal-Nevada Conference KUMw Network and the presidents of each local church, as well as all the UMW members’ hearts and passion for missions. It was such a meaningful mission bazaar in which the same mind, same passion, and same vision all worked together for good. The NNKUMw Annual Conference 2021 The NNKUMw Annual Conference was held on November 15th, 6pm(PST)/8pm(CST)/9pm(EST) via Zoom. Executives and members totaling 62 participated in the conference, which consisted of end-of-year ministry reporting, finance reporting, as well as end-of-year settlement. The video greetings and ministry reports sent from all the missionaries, as well as from superintendents in Russia and Central Asia were a huge blessing to all of us. We elected our new president (Elder Man Kum Tuggle, Cal-Nevada Conference, Santa Clara UMC) and executives who would be serving for the 2022-2023 term, as well as took time to thank and appreciate our executives who have worked so hard for us for the last 8 years, Choonghee Han (Greater New Jersey) and Meesook Lee(N. Georgia). Though it was our first time holding the conference on Zoom, it showed us a new possibility thanks to our executives’ participation and preparation. We would like to thank all of our UMW members—who, despite the pandemic, have overcome the struggles with wisdom and creativity, and did not cease on doing missions for our Lord. | 환경선교- 기독교생태정의
교육이란 인간을 기르는 행위이다. 지금 우리는 새로운 문명의 대전환기에 서 있으며, 그것은 새로운 인간을 요구하고 있다. 바울은 일찍이 종말적 상황을 전 피조세계가 하나님의 자녀들을 애타게 기다리고 있는 시점으로 묘사했다. 생태적 인간이란, 생명을 살리는 생태노동을 하는 사람이라고 말할 수 있다. 우리가 기르고 따라야 할 생태노동은 한마디로 하나님의 생명의 법칙, 다른 사람을 위함으로써만 비로소 나를 위함이라는 생명의 법칙을 따르는 삶의 방식이다. 그것은 다름 아닌 하나님의 노동방식이다. 그것은 기독교 교육의 궁극적 목적인 하나님 나라를 이루는 방법이다.

Environmental Mission: Christian Ecological Justice Education Education is the act of raising humans. Now we are in the transition period of a new civilization, and it is demanding a new human being. Paul described the end times as a time when the entire world eagerly waits for the children of God. Ecological humans can be described as one who engages in ecological labor that saves lives. The kind of ecological labor we should raise and follow is, in short, a way of life that follows God's law of life—which states that only when it is for others that it is for ourselves. It is none other than God's way of working. It is a way to form a kingdom of God, the ultimate purpose of Christian education. That is what Jesus describes as the way God feeds and dresses the lilies in the fields and birds in the air. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:25-33). God's way of labor is denial of artificial behavior in which humans take advantage of nature to fit their motives and desires; it means active actions that follow God's will and His heart. Our reality has seen that the way of human/world labor has led to human desire to eat more, live more comfortably, and live longer, dominating and exploiting nature and fellow human labor forces—all of which have gradually moved mankind further and further away from life and salvation. If we do not repent and reflect all our achievements and prospects onto God's heart in order to save life; if we do not switch our methods to God's way of labor, all our interests and actions will remain in a mere band-aid solution for immediate interests. If we dream of abandoning the dying Earth, deeming it as no longer useful for mankind, and aspire to move to a new planet, the Earth may abandon humanity. To summarize, mankind has run breathlessly—conquering every obstacle that got in our way, occupying and exploiting every corner of the ecosystem—and now, found ourselves at a crossroad in history. The only hope for survival is to stop attacking the Earth and seek a way to coexist with the order of nature. The solution lies in changing our way of labor in a dominant, selfish world into God’s way of labor, being oneself by being for others. Christian education for salvation should be an education that recognizes and practices the world of creation from an ecological point of view. To view the world from an ecological standpoint means to look at it with a worldview that all creatures are organically connected. From this perspective, all creatures are the same in their value. Therefore, it is a violation of God's law of creation and a crime to take advantage of, suppress, and exploit beings other than oneself as a means to inflate one’s own life. God is love. His love is a love that gives His own life to save a life, having mercy on life—a way of God's labor. This love is shown through justice. Love that is not revealed by justice is simply emotional. God is an Almighty One. And His absolute divine power is a way of demonstrating His love. Thus, a power that lacks love and justice is mere violence. As such, ecological justice is a way in which God's existence is displayed. Therefore, we can say that God's justice is ecological justice, and at the same time, the Kingdom of God we hope for is a nation where ecological justice is practiced. In this respect, it can be said that Christian education is discovered through ecological justice education. Christian ecological justice education will start with interpreting the Bible from an ecological perspective, and learning the secret of life in God’s work, who is still engaged in ecological labor in the natural world where the laws of life are maintained. It will be achieved through the process of learning and practicing through the life and death of Jesus Christ, God the Son on the cross, as well as from many creatures that give birth to and raise life through self-sacrifice. Thus, this ecological education and life must be revealed in the form of a movement (God's labor) that practices self-sacrifices to save others’ lives in all ecosystems on Earth that are now threatened. I believe that this book will greatly benefit all Christians who have received Jesus, and desire to experience the power of the Holy Spirit as God’s children. It first corrects our wrong concepts about the Holy Spirit as well as our wrong habits of spiritual life: The Holy Spirit—who has once demonstrated power back in the Pentecost. The author stresses that: when we are sanctified to become Christians filled with the Spirit, when we abundantly fill our clean souls with the spirit of Christ—in other words, when we surrender everything and let the Lord become the master and king of our life, it is then when the Holy Spirit fulfills God’s will with His power through us and through our church. I feel this is a must-read Word of God to all the Christians who desire to live by experiencing the power of the Spirit inside of us. (Written by: Rev. ‘존재’만으로도 선교가 되는 …"
이름도 빛도 없이 사라진 분들 또한 얼마나 많을까요? 학교를 짓고 병원을 설립하기까지의 고충은 또 어찌 헤아릴 수 있을까요? 그럼에도 불구하고 사회의 소외된 자들을 위하여 예수 그리스도의 뜻을 이어받아 자신의 실천적 삶으로 함께 한 개척자 신앙은 피땀으로 이루어진 우리의 값진 유산입니다. 전도 부인을 파송하고 멀리 해외 러시아와 만주에까지 선교사들을 보내었고 계몽 운동과 민족 해방 운동까지 우리의 잠재워진 여성의 지위를 세우고 평등과 평화의 길을 향한 노력을 기울였음에 감사드립니다. 선교의 문을 열기 위해 오직 사랑으로 함께 한 스크랜턴 대부인, 홀가족, 캠벨 부인, 전삼덕전도부인, 그리고 이름없는 모든 분께도 깊은 감사를 드리며 선교의 빚진 자로서 이 시대의 우리는 무엇을 담아야 하는가에 대한 무거운 책임감도 느낍니다.
‘Existence’ itself is a mission…
뉴욕연합회에서는 지난 13일 토요일에 한혜윤 회장댁에 모여서 임원회를 가졌다. 이번 임원회는 올해 마지막 임원회로서 1년간의 선교사역 평가, 재정 결산과 2022년 선교사역 계획을 세웠다.
이민자 보호교회의 서류미비자 싱글맘 렌트비 보조와 뉴욕 노숙자 쉘터 구입을 위해 나눔의 집이 선정되었다. 코로나 19의 어려운 상황 속에서도 열심히 선교사역 모금을 위해 도토리 국수, 비프 져키, 고사리, 버섯, 꿀, 차가버섯, 등의 판매와 교회별로 선교 걷기를 실시해서 보내온 선교비가 이렇게 예산 초과의 재정이 된 것을 임원들 모두 놀라며, 눈물로 감사의 기도를 드렸다. 뉴욕의 한인연합감리교회 회원들의 후원과 기도의 결실이기도 하다. 내년에는 하나님께서 어떤 선교사역을 우리를 통해 이루어 나가실지 기대를 하며 재충전된 몸과 마음으로 임원회를 마치고 돌아왔다.
● 뉴욕 나눔의 집에서 한인 노숙자의 집 마련을 위한 모금에 동참
Kazakhstan Greenhouse Mission, as well as conduct some ministry for the local community. We selected supporting the undocumented single mothers of the Sanctuary Church who are facing rent issues, and supporting the homeless shelter purchase by the New York Nanoom House. Despite the difficult situation of COVID-19, all executives were surprised that the mission funds collected and raised from the fundraiser selling acorn noodles, beef jerky, bracken, mushrooms, honey, tea mushrooms, etc., and from the Mission Walk fundraiser from each church produced so much funds reaching beyond our needs, so everyone prayed with tears. We believe it is also due the support and prayers by the members of KUMW churches in New York. It is also the fruit of sponsorship and prayer of members of the Korean Methodist Church in New York. I returned from the executive meeting with a recharged mind and body, looking forward to the missions and ministries that God will achieve through us next year.
