몽골 기독여성 내적 치유 세미나

(지난 5월 20일부터 22일(현지일정)까지 몽골기독여성 내적치유세미나가 줌으로 열렸다. 강사로 이영희 목사가 미국 콜로라도에서 강의를 해주셨고 뉴욕의 김명래 총무가 개회예배 설교로 참여했으며, 통역은 몽골여성인 어기자매가 한국에서 온라인으로 참여하여 수고했다. 전체 준비와 인도는 몽골에서 사역하고있는 그레이스 조 선교사가 행사를 주관했다. *편집자 주)

이번 세미나는 정말 많은 축복을 받은 세미나였습니다. 세미나를 인도해주신 이영희 목사님께 대단히 감사를 드립니다. 내가 거저 얻은 것은 구원, 다른 사람을 사랑하는 사랑, 다른 사람과 나눌 수 있는 것, 기도 할 수 있는 것, 그리고 다른 많은 선물을 값없이 받았음에 감사를 드립니다. 하지만 거저 받은 것을 전하지 않은 제 잘못에 대해 회개를 하였습니다.
고통의 방의 문들은 저한테는 아주 익숙한 문들이었습니다. 하나님을 믿기 전에 모든 문들 안에 들어가 보았기 때문입니다. 모든 문이 열려 있었습니다. 하나님을 영접하고 믿은 지난 10 년 동안 하나님께서 저를 치유해 주시고, 열려 있는 문들을 다 닫아 주셨습니다. 하지만 아직도 닫히지 않은 문들이 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그것들은 지난날 과거의 아픔에서 사는 삶, 나에 대한 비난, 그리고 죄책감의 문들입니다.
첫째. 왜 내가 고통의 방에 갇혀 있는지 생각해 보았습니다. 저는 어렸을 때부터 늘 비난을 받았던 아이라 어린 시절에 대한 기억이 싫고 그 죄책감도 늘 마음에 머물러 있습니다.
둘째. 다니엘의 회개의 기도를 통해 주님께 회개하고, 고통의 방의 문들을 닫아 달라고 기도해야겠다는 생각으로 남편과 저는 다니엘의 회계의 기도를 시작했습니다.
셋째. 용서 편지를 쓰기로 마음을 먹고 써 보았습니다. 편지를 써보니 마음이 가벼워지고 기분이 무척 좋아졌습니다. 치유를 위해 기도를 시작하면서 주님께서 저를 완전히 치유해 주신다는것을 확신합니다.
넷째. 하나님을 매일 찾고, 하나님과 친밀한 관계를 맺으며, 하나님을 사랑하는 법을 배우고, 하나님의 음성을 듣기 위해 영적 훈련을 하기로 남편과 저는 결심을 했습니다.
다섯째. 나는 모든 축복의 방에 들어가서 하나님을 사랑하는 법을 배우고 항상 예수님과 동행하고 성령님의 인도하심으로 거룩한 삶으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 살고 싶습니다.
여섯 번째. 축복의 방으로 들어가기 위해 도움이 되는 기도들은 정말 좋았습니다. 남편과 저는 그 기도를 따라 매일 기도하고 있습니다.
일곱 번째. 나를 치유하신 하나님을 찬양하며 그것을 교인들과 함께 나누길 원합니다.
여덟 번째. 세미나에 참석한 우리 교인 두 명도 많은 은혜를 많이 받았다고 간증을 하여 감사를 드립니다.
사랑하는 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 목사님과 선교사님들께도 감사를 드립니다. 하나님의 은혜와 치유가 모든 사역에 가득 차길 기도합니다. 몽골에 다른 많은 사람도 치유받을 수 있기를 간절히 기도합니다. 모든 영광을 하나님께 돌립니다. 아멘

Mongolian Christian women’s Inner Healing Seminar

(Last May 20th to 22nd (local schedule), Mongolian Christian women’s Inner Healing Seminar was held by Zoom. Pastor Younghee Lee gave a lecture in Colorado, USA as a lecturer, and Executive Director Myung-rae Kim Lee of New York delivered a sermon in the opening service and interpreted. Ms. Oogii, a Mongolian woman, interpreted the whole seminar through Zoom from Korea, and the entire preparation and delivery of the event was organized by Missionary Grace Cho, who is working in Mongolia. *Editor's Note)

This seminar was a very blessing to me. I would like to thank Rev. YoungHee Lee for leading the seminar. I am thankful for undeserved salvation, love for others, being able to love others and share with others,  things to pray for, and so many other gifts that I have received. I repented for not sharing what I have received at no cost.

The doors of the rooms of pain were very familiar to me, because I have gone through all those doors before I have come to Christ. All the doors were open, and for the past 10 years since I accepted and believed in God, He has healed me and closed all the open doors. But I found out that there were still doors that have yet to be closed. Those are the doors to the room of living a life tied to the pains of the past, a room of self-blame, and a room of guilt.

First, I thought about why I was stuck in a room of pain. I've always been criticized since I was a child, so I hate the memory of my childhood and the guilt is always on my mind.
Second, my husband and I began Daniel's prayer of repentance in order to repent to the Lord and ask Him to close the doors of the rooms of pain.
Third, I decided to write a forgiveness letter. Writing it lightened up my mind and made me feel very good. As I start praying for healing, I am sure that the Lord will heal me completely.
Fourth, my husband and I decided to seek God every day, build an intimate relationship with Him, learn to love Him, and to train ourselves spiritually to hear His voice.
Fifth, I want to go into every blessed room and learn how to love God and always walk with Jesus, living a life of honoring God guided by the Holy Spirit. 
Sixth, I really liked the prayers that helped me get into the room of blessing. My husband and I follow that prayer every day.
Seventh, I praise my God who has healed me and I’d like to share it with the church members.
Eighth. I am thankful that two of my church members who attended the seminar testified that they were greatly blessed through the seminar.

I give thanks to my loving God. I also thank the pastors and missionaries. I pray for God's grace and healing to be filled in all the ministries. I deeply pray that many other people in Mongolia will be healed. I give all the glory to God. Amen.

내적 치유 세미나

이번 세미나를 인도해 주신 이영희 목사님께 감사를 드립니다. 사흘 동안 진행되었던 세미나를 통해 많은 것을 배워서 참으로 기쁩니다. 제가 배운 중에서 몇 가지를 나누겠습니다.

1) 고통의 방과 치유의 기도.
고통의 방에 12개 문이 있습니다. 마귀의 공격, 마귀의 환영, 악령의 음성, 악몽, 과거 충격 재발, 상실과 트라우마, 중독의 삶, 분노와 증오, 혼란, 우울증과 절망, 교도소 투옥, 그리고 우상숭배 입니다. 이 12개의 방은 네 가지 이유로 들어갈 수 있으며 자기 자신도 모르게 들어갈 수 있습니다.
자기 죄 때문에, 다른 사람들의 죄 때문에, 상심, 상실과 트라우마 때문에 그리고 불신앙적인 환경입니다.
고통의 문이 열려 있다면 회개의 기도로 닫을 수 있고, 기도를 통해 축복의 방으로 들어갈 수 있음을 배웠습니다.

2) 축복의 방 다니엘의 기도.
하나님의 사랑에 초점을 맞추는 것, 예수님과 동행하는 것, 성령님의 인도하심, 평화와 기쁨과 치유, 순종, 거룩한 삶, 하나님 나라에 대한 신실함, 하나님께 영광 돌리기, 영적 승리, 이 모든 것이 있다면 축복의 방에 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 축복의 방의 12개 문은 하나님의 임재 체험, 환상, 하나님의 음성, 꿈, 변화의 간증, 상실감에서 치유, 정결한 삶, 회개와 용서, 영적 지혜,
예수님을 섬김, 영적 승리 그리고 하나님 사랑입니다. 은혜의 방에 들어가게 해주는 네 가지 요소는 예수님을 믿는 믿음, 참된 회개, 성령 체험과 인도하심, 그리고 하나님을 사랑하고 섬김입니다.
고통의 방에서 나와서 축복의 방으로 들어가 예수님과 동행하며, 기쁨과 성령이 충만한 삶을 사는 비결을 배웠습니다.

3) 슬픔과 상실.
저의 친정아버지의 연세는 58세 이십니다. 심장마비 때문에 오래 누워 있으셔야 하고 진통제 주사를 계속 맞고 계십니다. 의학적으로 치유가 불가능하다고 합니다. 아버지가 고통스러워하시는 모습을 보기가 정말 힘이 듭니다. 친정어머니는 다리가 부러지시고 현재 목발을 짚고 걸어다니십니다. 우리 부모님은 불신자이십니다. 저는 매일 부모님의 치유를 위해 하나님께 기도합니다. 건강하시지는 않지만 살아계심에 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 하지만 왜 하나님께서 아직도 우리 부모님을 치유해 주시지 않는지 원망이 항상 있었습니다. 우리 부모님을 치유하시는데 제 기도가 충분하지 않은 건가요? 아직 회개하지 않은 죄가 있는 건가? 라는 질문이 항상 저에게는 있었습니다. 그런데 이번 세미나를 통해서 하나님은 많은 질문에 대답을 해주셨습니다. 제 주변의 친구들과 아는 성도님들이 슬픔과 상심 때문에 하나님에 대한
믿음을 버리는 것을 많이 보았습니다. 만약에 저에게도 슬픔과 상실이 오면 하나님을 사랑하지 않게 되면 어떡하지? 라는 두려움이 있었습니다. 그래서 저는 하나님께 기도하고, 하나님을 떠나는 일이 없도록 도와달라고 기도했습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님께서 십자가에서 흘리신 피가 무가치해지는 것을 원하지 않기 때문입니다. 때로는 저에게 믿음으로 아버지의 아픈 곳에 손을 대어 기도해 본 적이 있냐고 비난의 목소리가 들립니다. 어머니의 부러진 발에 손을 얹고 믿음으로 기도하며 하나님이 치유해 주실 건지 아닌지를 시험해 보라는 음성도 들립니다. 이럴때 마다 저는 너무 무섭습니다. 하지만 이번 세미나를 통해서 고통의 방에 갇혀 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그리고 고통의 방에서 나가는 방법도 배웠습니다. 만약에 제가 세미나에 참석하지 않았다면 고통의 방에 오랫동안 갇혀 있었을지도 모르겠습니다. 사랑하는 아버지와 같이 오래 살고 싶은 제 욕심을 사탄이 알아서 유혹을 하는 것을 알았습니다. 인간은 이 세상에 영원히 살지 못하는 나그네입니다. 내적 치유 책이 속히 출판되기를 간절히 기도하며 기다리고 있습니다. 감사합니다.

Inner Healing Seminar

I would like to thank Rev. Younghee Lee for leading this seminar. I'm so glad to have learned a lot from this three-day-long seminar. I will share a few of the things that I’ve learned.

1) Room of Pain and Prayer for Healing.
There are 12 doors in the pain room. Demonic attacks, demonic visions, demonic voices, nightmares, revisits of past shocks, loss and trauma, life of addiction, anger and hatred, confusion, depression and despair, prison imprisonment, and idol worship. These 12 rooms can be entered for four reasons and can be entered without realizing it: because of one's own sins, because of other people's sins, because of heartbreak, loss and trauma, and because of a faithless environment.

I learned that if the door to pain is open, I can close it with a prayer of repentance and enter the room of blessing through prayer.

        2) Room of Blessings and Daniel's prayer.
I learned that focusing on God's love, walking with Jesus, guidance of the Holy Spirit, peace, joy and healing, obedience, a holy life, faithfulness to God's kingdom, giving glory to God, spiritual victory… that with all of these, we are in the room of blessing. The 12 doors of the blessing room are: experience of God’s presence, fantasies, God's voice, dreams, testimony of transformation, healing from loss, a pure life, repentance and forgiveness, spiritual wisdom, serving Jesus, spiritual victory, and God's love. The four elements that make us enter the room of blessings are: faith in Jesus, true repentance, Spirit encounter and guidance, loving and serving God.

I learned the secret of coming out of the room of pain and entering the room of blessing, walking with Jesus, and living a life full of joy and the Spirit.

3) Sadness and loss.
My father is 58 years old. He has to lay down for a long time due to a heart attack and keeps getting painkiller shots. Scientifically, they say healing is impossible. It's very hard to see my father in pain. My mother broke her leg and is currently walking on crutches. My parents are unbelievers; I pray to God every day for their healing. I thank God that they are still alive despite being unhealthy. But there has always been resentment on why God still hasn’t healed my parents. Was it that my prayers aren’t enough to heal my parents? Was it because I had lots of sins I haven’t repented yet? These questions were always with me.

But through this seminar, God answered a lot of questions. I have seen many of my friends and fellow believers abandon their faith in God because of sadness and heartbreak. So, I had this fear of ‘what if I stop loving God when I face grief and loss?’ Hence, I prayed to God to prevent anything to happen that would make me leave God, because I don't want the blood that Jesus has shed on the cross to become worthless. Sometimes I hear voices criticizing me, asking whether I have laid my hands on my father’s ill body and prayed with faith.  There is also a voice asking me to lay my hand on my mother's broken foot and pray with faith, to test whether God will heal her or not. Every time this happens, I'm so scared.

But through this seminar, I learned that I had been trapped in a room of pain. And I learned how to get out of it. If I hadn't attended the seminar, I might have been stuck in the pain room for a long time. I realized that Satan was using my desire for a long-lived life for my beloved father. However, we are only nomads on earth, who cannot live in this world forever. I am eagerly praying for the inner healing book to be published as soon as possible. Thank you.

Nina Kim, Living Stone UMC: I liked everything, the long-awaited communication, it was so happy to meet with sisters from Russia and the United States. I liked the lectures, the common prayer and prayers in small groups.
Yong-dya Yoon, God's Dream UMC: I received a lot of useful information at the seminar. Bishop Edward reminded us of the value of women. How important it is to remember God's love for us. I remember and appreciate sisters from America for their prayers and help in our ministry.

Tatiana Kogay, Slavnaya UMC: I thank the Lord and appreciate the team of organizers of the UMW 2021 conference. During the pandemic period, we cooled down a little, we lacked spiritual live support and sisterly hugs, live direct emotions. And finally it happened! We are gathered in a beautiful place: the new building of the Center for Church Leadership in the Far East! We glorified God together, rejoiced together, and prayed for each other! It is such happiness to feel that you are a woman: wise and beautiful, humble and determined! Thank God!
Ekaterina Akhtamyanova, (34 years old), Slavnaya UMC: Thanks to the organizers of the United Methodist Women’s conference, thanks to the Lord, and to the sisters and brothers that such ministry exists! At these meetings, we strengthen our faith, support each other, get positive emotions, and live communication. I really liked it, I wanted to have more such meetings and get new knowledge.
Elena Koblova, Slavnaya UMC: I have been with Christ for 6 years, this is my first time at the UMC women seminar. I am very grateful to Kang Mi-yong, the pastor and consultant psychologist. 가정과 교회가 해야 할 고민

이번 6월 26일 세 번째로 열린 학당에서 “한인 이민 역사와 2세 신앙교육”이라는 주제로 김남중 교수님께서 줌으로 세미나를 인도해 주셨습니다. 이 강의에서는 '교회'와 '가정'이 어떻게 하면 우리 2세들을 한인교회에서 바른 신앙인으로 양육할 수 있을까를 놓고 고민하고, 기도하게 하며, 이민 가정을 우리의 선교지로 품게 하는 귀한 도전과 결단의 시간이었습니다.

미국에서 살아가고 있는 한인 이민 1세대와 2세대 자녀들은 한국과 다른 환경과 시대적 배경에서 살아가고 있음을 깨닫게 됩니다. 1세와 2세 사이에서의 정서/문화적 이질감, 한인교회의 잦은 분열과 다툼은 2세, 3세들에게 교회를 떠나고 마침내 신앙을 버리게 하는 하나의 원인이 될 수 있다고 여겨집니다.

여기서 더하여 요즘의 아시안 혐오 분위기로 아시아 이민자 2세로서 자신들의 건강한 정체성까지 위협받고 있습니다. 그래서 어떻게 하면 아시아 이민자인 2세들에게 하나님의 존귀한 자녀로서의 정체성을 가지고 믿음을 지키며 살아가게 할 것인가를 고민하게 만듭니다. 결국 인종 간의 갈등 사이에서 화평의 도구로 쓰임 받으며 살아가게 하는 사명이 우리 자신과 이민교회에 주어졌음을 깨닫게 됩니다.
이스라엘 백성들이 디아스포라로 여러 나라에 흩어졌을 때도 자신들의 신앙의 뿌리와 민족의 정체성을 자녀들에게 가르쳤듯이 코리안 디아스포라의 삶을 살아가고 있는 이민 1세대와 교회들이 오늘도 신명기 6장 7, 8절 “네 자녀에게 부지런히 가르치며 집에 앉았을 때에든지 길에 행할 때에든지 누웠을 때에든지 일어날 때에든지 이 말씀을 강론할 것이며 너는 또 그것을 네 손목에 매어 기호를 삼으며 네 미간에 붙여 표를 삼는” 말씀을 기억하며 지켜 행해야 함은 우리 가정이 우리 교회가 해야 할 사명임을 깨닫습니다.

그리고 부모들은 가정에서 자녀들과 믿음의 이야기를 나누어서 자연스럽게 믿음이 그들에게 전해지도록 해야 한다는 깊은 책임감을 느낍니다.
줌으로 시간과 공간을 넘어 다시 하나님이 주신 이 땅에서의 선교의 사명을 재점검하게 기회를 주신 하나님께 영광 돌리며, 기도로 준비하신 전국연합회 임원들, 그리고 명강의를 해 주신 김남중 교수님께 감사드립니다.

What the Family and Church Should be Concerned About

At the third Virtual School held on June 26, Professor Nam Joong Kim led the zoom seminar on the topic of "Korean Immigration History and Educating the Faith to Our Second Generations" The lecture was a precious time of motivation and determination, that challenged us to ponder, pray, and embrace our family as a mission field as we learned about what the church and family can do in order to train our second generation children in the faith at the Korean church.

We see and realize that the first and second generations of Korean immigrants living in the United States live in an environment and background different from how it is like in Korea. The emotional/cultural differences between the first and second generations, as well as frequent divisions and disputes in the Korean churches, are believed to be one of the causes of the second and third generations leaving the church and finally abandoning their faith. Furthermore, today's cultural climate of hatred towards Asian is even threatening the second generations’ otherwise healthy self-image and identity. Therefore, this makes us think about how we can help them to live their lives keeping the faith as God's precious children. Eventually, we realize we and the immigrant churches have been given the mission to live as instruments of peace amid the inter-racial conflicts.

Just as the Israelites had trained their children their roots of faith and their national identity even when they were scattered as a diaspora to many different nations, we as the first generation who are living as a Korean Diaspora, and the church, must remember God’s Word in Deuteronomy 6:7-8 ( You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes). It is our family’s and the church’s mission to hold onto this command and keep them. And we as parents do feel a deep responsibility to share the stories of faith with our children at home so that they naturally inherit the faith.

I would like to give God the glory for giving me the opportunity, beyond the constrictions of time and space through zoom, to re-examine my calling for missions on this God-given land, and I thank Professor Nam Joong Kim for giving such a profound lecture.

제3회 여선교회 학당을 듣고

한인여선교회 전국연합회에서 주최한 제3회 학당은 한인 이민 역사와 2세 신앙교육이라는 주제로 클레어몬트 신학대학원에서 실천신학을 가르치시는 김남중 교수님께서 많은 자료와 짜임새 있는 내용으로 진행해주셨습니다. 제가 평소에 관심이 있었던 세미나 제목이어서 참석을 하게 되었고 김 교수님 자신도 미국에서 자녀를 키우는 한인으로서 오랫동안 연구하며 준비한 많은 자료와 여러 가지 열린 질문으로 굉장히 유익한 시간이었습니다. 그리고 이 세미나는 여선교회에서 2세 자녀들의 정체성과 신앙교육을 돕는 징검다리가 되고자 하는 목표에 걸맞은 탁월한 세미나였습니다.

김남중 교수님께서 이 세미나를 3개의 소제목 아래 나누어 진행하셨습니다. 첫 번째 소제목은 내가 누구인지 알아가는 단계로서 당신에게 한국인이란 누구인가이었습니다. 현재 세계 180개국에 745만 명의 한국인이 디아스포라로 흩어져 살고 있습니다. 최근 몇 년 동안 영화 기생충과 미나리, 그리고 빌보드 차트(Billboard chart) 1위를 달리는 곡들을 연이어 발표하는 BTS, 그리고 G7 회의에 연속 참가 등을 통해 한국의 위상이 국제적으로 매우 높아져 있는 반면 한인들의 이민자로서의 고단한 삶을 그린 단편 영화들인 Call Taxi, Happy Cleaners, Homework 등은 또 다른 한국인들의 삶을 보여주며 다양한 디아스포라의 한국인의 삶이 존재하고 있음을 보여줍니다.
이런 다양한 한인들의 삶을 듣고 보며 우리 각자는 한국인을 어떤 사람으로 정의하는지 그리고 우리가 우리 자녀들과 한국인으로서 어떤 이야기를 쓰며 만들어가고 있는지 김 교수님은 질문하시고 그 이야기가 물질주의와 성공을 주제로 한 이야기가 아니라 복음의 이야기가 되어야 한다고 말씀하시고 교회들도 이 사회와 영합한 세속적 가치를 추구하도록 부추기는 이야기가 아니라 진정한 선교 저항 정신의 관점에서 보는 생명의 복음 이야기를 교인들에게 선포해야 한다고 말씀하셨습니다.

두 번째 소제목은 한인 이민 역사에 관해 역사적으로 3단계로 나누어 볼 수 있는 한인 이민역사를 많은 자료를 통해 설명해 주시면서 우리의 이민역사가 어떻게 시작되었고 현재까지 진행되었는지 알고 자녀와 한인 이민 역사이야기를 나누어야 미래에 대한 시각을 가질 수 있다고 강조하셨습니다. 우리가 우리 이민 역사를 잊지 않고 이웃들과 그리고 우리 자녀들과 나눌 때 우리 이야기는 생명을 갖게 되고 생명이 있는 이야기는 변화를 가져오며 그럴 때 우리에게는 미래가 있게 된다고 합니다.
세 번째 소제목인 2세 신앙 교육에 대해서는 1세대와 2세대 간의 세대적, 문화적 차이로 인한 여러 가지 문제를 말씀하시면서 구체적으로 가족, 문화, 결혼, 교육 면에서 2세대와의 단절을 고민하는 아픔을 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 한국에서는 18%밖에 되지 않는 기독교인 숫자가 미국 한인 사회에서는 80%가 기독교인 인 것을 고려할 때 미국에 있는 한인교회가 물질 숭배, 유교적인 영향을 과감히 벗어버리고 진정한 복음의 이야기를 제시하며 서로를 받아들이는 공감 교육을 할 때 우리 미래에 소망이 있다고 말씀하시고 자녀들과 함께하는 Dinner Church라는 새로운 복음 이야기 쓰기 방식을 시행해보기를 추천하셨습니다.

이 세미나를 들으며 제가 개인적으로 기억에 남는 관점은 우리가 2세 정체성과 2세들의 독자적인 목소리를 찾을 수 있도록 도우려 할 때 그들에게 한인 이민 역사에 대한 정보를 주고 한인 이민 역사를 바르게 이해하도록 이끌어주는 것이 매우 중요하고 필요함을 인식하게 되었고 그랬을 때 2세들이 한인 사회와 한국과도 자연스럽게 연대할 수 있는 동기와 계기가 될 수 있음을 이해하게 되었습니다. 3가지 소주제가 다들 중요하고 토론할 것이 너무 많아 한번이 아니라 두 번에 걸쳐 만나 이루어지는 세미나가 되어 각 소제마다 소그룹 토론도 하며 각자의 상황과 문제들을 좀 파악하고 변화와 혁신을 향한 방향을 잡을 수 있는 기회를 가졌더라면 하는 아쉬움이 있었습니다.

또 한 가지는 제가 95%가 백인인 미국 대학에서 아시아계 소수민족 교수로서 가르치면서 인종에 대한 시각을 깊고 넓게 캠퍼스에서 교육시키기 위해 아시아인의 입장에서 본 인종 문제 견해를 미국에서 활동하는 다양한 아시아계 리더들을 캠퍼스에 4년 동안 매년 2 - 3명을 초대하며 바쁜 활동가(activist)의 삶을 산적이 있습니다. 유명한 아시아계 지도자들이 캠퍼스에 와서 해주는 다양한 강의와 세미나를 듣고 학생들이 그들이 느끼고 새롭게 배웠던 것들을 엣세이로 써내는 방식을 통해 백인 학생들이 그들의 편견과 무지에서 벗어나 타인종에 대한 이해와 태도 변화가 형성되도록 최선을 다하면서 뿌듯한 보람을 많이 느꼈지만, 강의와 세미나에서 배우는 지식만으로는 백인 학생들과 교수들의 진정한 변화를 가져오기를 기대하기가 어려움을 또한 배웠습니다. 미국에서 오랫동안 지속돠고 있는 부끄러운 인종차별의 문제가 근본적으로 해결되려면 복음 이야기로 접근 하는 게 최선임을 그 경험 후 개인적으로 결론지었는데 김 교수님이 강의 중에 제시한 새로운 복음 이야기의 26가지 리스트 중에서 몇 가지를 앞으로 시도해보고 싶습니다

After attending the 3rd virtual school seminar run by Korean Methodist Women.  

Professor Namjung Kim, who is currently teaching practical ministry at Clairmont Seminary, gave a very informative and well-structured seminar titled "Korean American Immigrant History and Christian Faith Education for the Second-Generation Korean Americans." His topic got my attention since I have been concerned about the same issues for a long time. As a parent raising his own children in the States, Prof. Kim has explored and researched this topic devotedly for many years; thus during his seminar he could present abundant info and challenging open questions regarding Korean Immigrants history and Christian faith education for the second generation Korean Americans. I believe this seminar also served perfectly well for one of KUMW's major goals to be a steppingstone to help educate identity and Christian faith for the 2nd generation Korean Americans. 

Professor Kim divided this seminar under three subtitles. The first one was "who am I ? '' especially in terms of a Korean?" "Who do you think a Korean is?" Korean diaspora currently lives in 180 countries, totaling 7.45 millions, which ranked the 4th among all the nations in its diaspora numbers. In recent years Koreans made worldwide top news with superb performances in various fields such as two academic awards movies like Parasite and Minari, billboard winning BTS musics, impressive nationwide health system under Pandemic, and joining G7 world leader conference etc. while also displaying difficult struggles to survive as immigrants in independent movies like "Call Taxi", "Happy Cleaners", and "Homework." 

Considering these diverse and complex Korean lives, how do we define who we Koreans are and what kind of story are we presently making or writing with our children as Koreans? Prof. Kim desires to see Korean church leaders give out genuine stories based on true Gospel, not the ones focused on materialism and success; they should not confirm or encourage secular values but proclaim the gospel replete with living life. 

Prof. Kim's second subtitle is Korean Immigrant History, for which he presented profuse info on Korean American Immigrant history in three major periods. One of his major points is that it is vital to share our understanding of Korean American Immigrant history with our children so that we can have insight into our future. When we do not forget our history and share it with our neighbors, our story will have a life of its own, which will bring our future to all of us. 

The third subtitle is Christian faith education for the 2nd generation Korean Americans. He presented various data and info displaying painful gaps between the first- and the second-generation Korean Americans due to cultural and generational differences, especially in the areas like family, culture, marriage and education. Despite these gaps, he wants to encourage all of us by the fact that almost 80% of Korean Americans are self- proclaimed Christians while only 18 % in Korea. In the Gospel itself he sees tremendous hopes in passing our Christian faith to the next generation. He recommends that the current Korean church leaders throw away Shamanistic and Confucian elements in Church worships and teachings and boldly present true Gospel story in refreshing ways. One of the renovating ways he suggested is dinner church worship where you can have dinner together with your children while worshiping God. He gave various examples from the New Testament in which Jesus ate with His disciples and used frequent images of eating as he taught them. 

One of the things I learned from this seminar is that when I want to help 2nd generations to deal with their identity and find their own voices, it is important for me to share Korean American immigrant history with them and provide a deep understanding of Korean immigrant history to them. When we do that, the 2nd generation Korean Americans will have natural connections with Korean American community and Korea and have motivations to connect with Korean community and Korea. These 3 big subtitles are all very important and so much to discuss; I wish we met twice so that we can have time for small groups to discuss and understand our own individual situations and issues and explore some kind of directions for change and renovations for each of us.

One final point I would like to add is coming from my teaching experience at a dominantly white American institution. As an Asian American minority faculty, I desire to teach a different perspective on race to my colleagues and students especially from Asian American point of view. So for about 4 years I worked hard to bring various renowned Asian American leaders every semester to our campus so that these leaders shared their unique views and experiences with our students, through which they could learn how to change their prejudices and ignorance on racial issues. These services to my institution were very rewarding and precious experiences in my career but also very important because I learned that these intellectual lectures and seminars are limited in changing deep-rooted racial issues. Just like Prof. Kim, I concluded that only the Gospel can bring a true solution for this nation’s long and bitter racial conflicts, and I plan to try out some of his 26 list of Gospel stories presented during his lecture in the coming semester.

선교학교( Mission u)를 마치고

UMW 의 년중 행사 중 하나인 선교학교가 올해는 매년마다 열리던 7월보다 일찍인 6월에 온라인으로 모였다. 원래는 북 조지아 연회의 미국, 한인, 히스패닉 여선교회가 해마다 모여 함께 찬양과 예배를 드리고 각자의 언어에 맞게 자신이 선택한 반에 들어가 공부를 했었지만 이번엔 함께 예배를 줌(ZOOM)으로 드리고 각자의 줌(ZOOM)으로 들어가 성경 공부를 했다.
6월 12일 토요일 오전 10시부터 3시까지 진행이 되었으며 이번 북조지아 연회 한인여선교회연합회의 선교학교는 21명이 줌(ZOOM)에서 만났다. 강사에 롬 UMC에서 목회하시는 김밀리 목사님께서 말씀을 전해주셨고 선교학교를 인도해 주셨다. 누가복음 4장 16-21 말씀을 토대로 “우리의 사명이 무엇인가” 라는 주제로 시작된 성경 공부에서 나 자신과 교회 공동체와 사회의 가치와 각 규범과 문화 속에서 예절, 도덕, 윤리의 범주를 토론하고 예문을 통해 알아보았다.
정죄와 분노의 5단계를 살펴봄으로써 우리가 문제를 어떻게 타협을 하고 결정을 하는지에 대한 논의가 이루어졌으며 시편 130편을 읽음으로 현실에 집중하고 과거에 우리를 도우신 하나님을 기억하며 의미 있는 일에 참여하므로 우리는 주님의 제자가 되어 하나님의 가족 공동체의 참모습을 보여 줄 수 있음의 결론을 맺었다.

1. 여호와여 내가 깊은 곳에서 주께 부르짖었나이다
2. 주여 내 소리를 들으시며 나의 부르짖는 소리에 귀를 기울이소서
3. 여호와여 주께서 죄악을 지켜보실진대 주여 누가 서리이까
4. 그러나 사유하심이 주께 있음은 주를 경외하게 하심이니이다
5. 나 곧 내 영혼은 여호와를 기다리며 나는 주의 말씀을 바라는도다
6. 파수꾼이 아침을 기다림보다 내 영혼이 주를 더 기다리나니 참으로 파수꾼이 아침을 기다림보다 더하도다
7 이스라엘아 여호와를 바랄지어다 여호와께서는 인자하심과 풍성한 속량이 있음이라

Reflecting on the Mission u

One of the UMW's annual events, the Mission u, was held this year in June instead of July. Formerly, N. Georgia Conference UMW’s American, Korean, and Hispanic UMW groups had always gathered in-person to praise and worship altogether and take classes in respective languages. This time, we had worship together on Zoom and had group Bible study sessions.

It was held from 10 am to 3pm on Saturday, June 12, and 21 people had gathered on Zoom from N. Georgia KUMw Network. Rev.Milie Kim of Rome UMC gave a sermon and led the Mission u. The topic of the Bible study was “What is Our Calling” based on the passage of Luke 4:16-21. We looked at the verses and discussed the values of myself, the church community, and society––as well as the definitions and standards of manners, morality, and ethics within each norm and culture.

Examining the five stages of judgment and anger, we had a discussion on how to compromise with and decide on matters. Also, by reading Psalm 130, we concluded that we can be Christ’s disciples and demonstrate a true image of a family community in God, by focusing on the current and remembering God’s helping hands in the past, and by participating in meaningful endeavors.

Lord, who could stand?

한인여선교회전국연합회에서는 지난 6월19일에 줌으로 녹색교회 만들기를 위한 위원회 모임을 가졌다. 점점 더워져 가는 지구의 온난화를 바라만 볼 수 없고, 하나님께서 창조하시고 보시기에 좋았다고 하셨는데 창조 세계를 지키는 청지기의 삶을 실천하기 위해서 위원회가 구성된 것이다.
위원회 구성을 위해서 전초 작업으로 지난 5월에 전국연합회 임원들과 지역연합회 임원들이 모여서 환경 세미나(강사 – 김명래 전국연합회 총무)를 3차례 가졌다. 그리고 환경 세미나의 실천사항으로 한인연합감리교회에서 ‘녹색교회 만들기’를 결정하였다.
녹색교회 만들기란? 하나님이 창조하신 자연 세계가 신음하고 있는 현실에서 생태계 질서를 회복시키고 환경 보존을 위한 사역을 교회들이 적극적으로 참여하여 환경선교를 실시하는 것이다. 지금 우리는 우리 미래세대의 땅을 빌려 쓰고 있기에 생태계를 회복한 미래를 만들어 주어야 한다.
녹색교회 만들기 위원회 첫 모임에서는 소모임을 통해서 전국연합회가 추진해야 할 사역 내용과 지역연합회가 실천해야 할 사역 내용이 무엇인지를 토론한 후 발표를 하였다. 4그룹에서 발표한 사항은 다음과 같다.

● 전국연합회가 시행해야 할 사역
- 전국연합회에서 정기적으로 환경 세미나를 실시한다.
- 지역연합회에서 환경 세미나를 실시한다.
- 환경에 관한 교육용 동영상을 제작하여 지역연합회에 나눈다.
- 환경선교에 관한 자료를 제공한다.
- 환경단체들과 연대해서 로비 활동을 한다.
- 1세와 2세 한인여선교회 회원들에게 환경에 관한 글쓰기 공모전을 실시한다. - 전국연합회 임원으로 환경부장 선출한다.
- 친환경 물건을 만드는 회사와 MOU를 체결하여 지역연합회의 선교 바자에서 판매하도록 한다.

● 지역연합회가 실천할 사역
- 지역연합회 임원으로 환경부장을 선출한다.
- 녹색교회 만들기 지역연합회 위원회를 조직하여 개체교회 여선교회에도 위원회를 조직하게 한다.
- 환경 세미나를 실시한다.
- 환경에 관한 포스터, 자료, 동영상을 개체교회 여선교회에 보낸다.
- 개체교회에서 환경 주일 지키도록 권면한다.
- 개체교회 지붕에 태양열 패널을 설치하도록 권장한다.
- 개체교회에서 일회용품 사용을 금지하고 개인용 컵과 음식물을 담을 개인용 컨테이너를 가지고 다니게 한다.
- 재봉틀 클래스를 열어 천으로 장바구니 만드는 교육을 한다.
- 온라인으로 링크를 만들어 개인이 환경선교를 위해 실천한 것을 보고하고 우수자를 시상한다.
- 천연세제, 천연 퇴비를 만드는 방법에 대해 세미나를 실시한다.
- 교회와 가정에서 분리수거를 철저하게 한다.
- 선교 바자에서 텃밭용 모종, 친환경 세탁세제, 친환경 비누, 등을 판매한다. - 어린이들 교육을 위해 환경에 관한 그림그리기를 공모한다.
모두가 절실하게 공감하는 생태계 회복을 위한 노력으로 녹색교회 만들기가 이제 시작되었다. 그러나 녹색교회 만들기에는 인내와 사랑과 소망이 크게 요구된다. 시작은 미약하지만 우리 한인여선교회 회원들이 같은 마음과 열정과 비전을 가지고 단결하여 노력한다면 생태계의 회복에 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 인간이 계획을 하고 열심히 일할 때 하나님께서 인도해 주시리라 믿는다.

Environmental Mission – Forming a Green Church Creation Committee

Last June 19th, our NNKUMw held a committee meeting to create green churches. The committee was formed with the need to start action on this continuously worsening situation of the earth’s global warming, and to protect this world that God had created and called “good.”

The initial preparatory stages of forming the committee were done by gathering the NNKUMw executives and local conference network executives over three sessions of Environmental Seminar (Speaker: Myungrae Lee, Executive Director of NNKUMw). As an application component of the seminar, we decided to ‘Create Green Churches’ throughout KUMC churches.

What does ‘creating a green church’ exactly mean? It means that churches would initiate environmental missions, by actively participating in ministries that make efforts to restore the order of the ecosystem and protect the environment. Since we are currently ‘borrowing’ this land that will be handed to our future generations, we must give them a future with a restored ecosystem.

At the first meeting of the Green Church Creation Committee, we discussed and presented on what kinds of ministries should be pursued by NNKUMw and what ministries must be practiced on the local conference network level. Below are the ideas presented by the four groups:

• Ministries to be initiated by the NNKUMw:
- Consistently host Environmental seminars.
- Host Environmental seminars in the local conference networks.
- Create an education video on the environment and distribute it to the local networks.
- Provide resources on environmental missions.
- Promote petitions/activities in solidarity with environmental groups.
- Hold a writing contest on the topic of the environment to the 1st and 2nd generation KUMW members.
- Elect an Environment Justice coordinator as an executive member of the NNKUw.
- Establish an MOU with an eco-friendly company and sell the goods at local networks’ fundraising bazaar events.

• Ministries to be practiced by the local conference networks:
- Elect an Environment Justice coordinator as an executive member of the local conference network.
- Form a ‘Green-Church-Creation-Committee’ in the local network and likewise have the local churches in the network form a committee in their UMW as well.
- Hold environmental seminars.
- Send posters, videos and materials about the environment to the local network church UMW.
- Encourage and keep Environment Sundays in the churches.
- Encourage installation of solar panels on the church roofs.
-Urge the use of personal cups and food containers, as well as prohibit the use of disposable products in the churches.
- Hold sewing classes and teach how to make cloth grocery bags.
- Create a link as a platform to report individual efforts and practices, and reward outstanding members.
- Hold seminars on how to make natural detergents and natural composts.
- Practice precise disposing of trash & recycling in the homes and churches.
- Sell eco-friendly detergents, soaps, and garden seedlings, etc at the Mission Fundraising Bazaar.
- Hold a drawing contest about the environment to educate the children.

Creating green churches has now begun with a deeply sympathized, collaborative effort to restore the ecosystem. Yet, this process requires patience, love, and hope. Although the start may be weak, if our members of NNKUMw unite with the same heart, passion and vision, we will be able to contribute to the recovery of the ecosystem. And I believe that God will guide us in our sincere plans and hardworking efforts.

세수비누 이야기

환경오염을 마음먹고 하려는 사람은 많지 않다. 어느새 플라스틱 쓰레기를 쉼없이 뿜어내며 자신도 모르게 오염물을 배출하는 삶을 사는 줄 모르고, 그저 살아가고 있을 뿐. 그러다 언젠가부터 거의 쓰지 않던게 눈에 들어왔다. 바로, 비누다!
나는 몇 해 전부터 액상이나 폼 얼굴 세정제 대신 고체 비누를 사용하고 있다. 이유는 고체 비누를 사용할 시 환경에 도움이 되는게 크게 두 가지가 있기 때문이다.

첫째, 플라스틱 포장 용기를 쓰레기로 배출하지 않는다.
둘째, 미생물 분해 가능한 성분 사용으로 환경 오염을 줄인다.
비누마다 각기 다른 허브나 꽃에서 추출한 에센셜 오일이 배합돼 있고, 때에 따라 필요한 비누를 골라 쓰면 기분이 좋아진다. 비누 하나로 세수도, 머리도 감고 모두 다 할 수 있다.
최근에는 액상 형태의 제품들도 친환경 제품으로 나오고 있기는 하지만 플라스틱 포장 용기를 배출하지 않는다는 점에서 고체 비누를 사용하고 있다.

우리가 일상생활에서 무심히 사용하고 있는 얼굴이나 몸 세정제, 치약, 화장품, 세탁비누등을 포함한 많은 제품에는 플라스틱 마이크로 비드라는 작은 플라스틱 물질이 들어 있다
이 작은 플라스틱 조각들은 물에 녹지 않기 때문에, 모공에서 기름과 먼지를 깨끗하게 하는 데 매우 효과가 있지만, 그것들은 너무 작기 때문에 폐수 처리 공장에서 처리 여과 시스템을 통해 여과되지 않고 결국 우리의 호수나 바다로 흘러 들어가게 된다.
마이크로 비드는 물에 들어가면, 자연적으로 먹이사슬에 들어가게 된다. 그들은 종종 동물성 플랑크톤에 의해 섭취되어 물고기들에게 먹이로 오인된다. 이 작은 해양 생물들은 물고기, 홍합, 굴과 같은 더 큰 종들에 의해 소비되고 궁극적으로 우리들의 식탁으로 돌아오게 되는 것이다.

그렇다면 우리는 미세 플라스틱 오염을 줄이기 위해서 무엇을 할 수 있을까?
1. 마이크로 비드가 들어 있는 제품을 더 이상 구입하지 않는다
2. 친환경 생활 세정 용품을 구입한다.
3. 플라스틱 포장 용기를 쓰레기로 배출하지 않도록 노력한다.

My Own Little Practice to Protect the Environment- Wash Soap Story.

Not many people intentionally cause environmental pollution. They merely live a life of emitting plastic waste and pollutants without even realizing it. One day, something came to my attention that I haven’t been long using: soap!
I've been using a solid soap bar instead of liquid or foam face wash for several years. The reason for it is that there are two main benefits to the environment when using a solid soap bar.
First, it does not emit plastic packaging as waste. Second, it reduces environmental pollution by using microbial degradable ingredients
Each soap is a mixture of essential oils extracted from different herbs and flowers, and sometimes choosing the soap I need makes me feel better.  I can wash my face, wash my hair, and do everything with one soap. Although liquid-type products are manufactured as eco-friendly nowadays, I still use solid soap bars since they do not emit plastic packaging.
Many products that we use casually in our daily lives, including face cleaners, toothpaste, and cosmetics, detergents, contain small plastic substances called plastic microbeads.
These tiny pieces of plastic don’t dissolve in water, which is why they work so well at cleaning out the oil and dirt out of the pores. However, because they are so small (less than 1 millimeter), microbeads may not get filtered through filtration systems, ending up in our lakes and oceans. Once in water, microbeads inadvertently enter the food chain. They are often mistaken for food and ingested by plankton. These small marine creatures are then consumed by larger species such as fish, mussels, and oysters and ultimately humans–eventually landing on our food table.
What can we do to reduce microbead pollution?
1. No longer purchase goods containing microbeads.
2. Purchase eco-friendly wash products.
3. Try not to emit plastic packaging waste.

청록의 계절 6월이 지나고 있습니다.

지난 6월말에 실시한 한인여선교회 제3회 학당에 참여해 주셔서 진심으로 감사드립니다. 이제 8월에 4회 학당을 실시하려고 합니다. 이번에도 참여해 주시고 주변에도 많이 알려주시기 부탁드립니다.

우리의 자화상 고린도 교회

2년 여 간의 팬데믹을 거치면서 교회의 역할과 사명인 모여서 전도하고 예배하는 일들이 우연인지 필연처럼 줄어들고 그 의미마저 많이 상실되었다. 하루하루 함께 모이는 날을 기다리며 많은 사람이 대면 예배와 친교에 목말라하는 이때 그동안 우리는 교회의 역할과 의미가 얼마나 퇴색되고 변형되었었나를 알 수 있었다.

고린도전서는 사도 바울이 고린도에서 자신이 세웠던 교회 곧 상당수의 무리로 구성된 가정 교회에 보낸 편지다. 이 편지는 제3차 전도여행 중 에베소에서 A.D. 54~55년 사이에 기록되었다. 고린도전서는 일반적인 신학 논문이 아니라 삶의 실제적인 문제에 직면한 교회 공동체를 위한 목회적인 편지다. 이 편지는 교회가 직면하는 많은 문제들을 바울이 어떻게 신학적으로 해석하며 또한 어떻게 독자들에게 그리스도의 복음에 입각한 마음의 변화와 그에 따른 행동을 요구하는지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 이것은 문제가 많은 현대 교회에 시사하는 바가 크다.

하나님께서는 이 편지를 통하여 모든 시대 자기 백성들에게 지속적으로 말씀하신다. 우리가 교회에서 해야 할 일들 교회의 의미와 가정 교회에 대한 정확한 가치를 다시 한번 새기어보고 초심으로 돌아가야 할 때이다.

Our Self-Portraits Corinthian Church

As the two-year-long pandemic has been going by, the role and the mission of the church–to gather and evangelize and worship–have inevitably decreased, and much of its meaning have been lost. During such a time when people have been longing face-to-face worship and fellowship, waiting for the day to come when we could gather again, we were able to see how faded and altered the role and meaning of the church had become. The book of Corinthians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to a home church that he had planted in Corinth. This letter was written between 54-55 A.D in Ephesus during Paul’s Third Missionary Journey. Corinthians are not general theological findings, but pastoral letters for the church community facing real problems in life. This letter illustrates how Paul interprets many of the problems faced by the church from a theological perspective and also shows the readers how Paul urges for a change of mind and subsequent actions based on the gospel of Christ. This suggests a great deal for the current troubled church. Through this letter God constantly speaks to His people over time, over ages and generations. It is time for us to once again recall and reflect on the meaning of the church and the exact values of the home church, and go back to our initial and original purpose.

Since then, we have been holding leadership training for our KUMW members as well as our daughters, second-generation Korean women. Moreover, we have been learning, sharing and growing together through holding leadership training for UMW women in Asia.
Our seniors of faith have trained lay female leaders under the vision of "Women help fellow women to make a better future,” continuing to write the history of great women mission with offerings, prayers and dedication.
