전국연합회 임원수련회

“ 임원수련회를 끝내고”
나를 아는 모든 사람이 한결같이 말했다. “추위를 그리 많이 타는분이 이 겨울에 뉴욕은 왜 가시나요? ” 중무장을 하고 길을 떠났다. 마음은 설레이나 얼마나 추울지가 슬슬 걱정 되었다. 겨우 사흘인데 이민가방 같다는 남편의 놀리는 소리도 듣는둥 마는둥 엄청나게 장비를 패킹 했다. 새벽 3시부터 일어나 비행장으로 향했다. 비행기가 늦게 도착하여 허둥대면서 김밥이 있다는 호텔로 가지 못하고 바로 모임장소인 교회로 갔다. 따뜻한 실내에 들어서는 순간, 따뜻하게 웃으며 환대하는 임원들을 만나니 모든 걱정은 기우에 불과했다. 당일부터 시작되는 빡세게(?) 하는 훈련이라는 말과는 달리, 예전과는 다르게 쫓기는 마음 없이 편안하게 바쁜 일정을 소화해냈다. 전혀 생각지 않았던 많은 것들을 배웠다.
30년 전 스카렛 베넷센터에서 느꼈던 흥분이 스멀스멀 올라왔다. 내가 처음 전국수련회에 참석했을 때 경이 그 자체 였다. 우선 성경 공부 시간이었다. 이제까지 알고 있었던 것과는 전혀 다른, 성경을 다른 시각에서 본 사라와 하갈에 대한 내용이었다. 그때까지 나는 내가 사라인 줄 알고 있었다. 근데 내가 하갈이라는 것이다. 나는 이제까지 내가 사라인 줄 알고 행동하고 생각해 왔던 것이다. 고정관념의 틀이 깨지는 순간이었다. 하갈의 편에서 볼 때 전혀 다른 눈으로 바라 볼 수 있었다. 그리고 여선교회에 관한 모든 교육은 나를 충분히 개안(?)시키고 흥분시키고도 남았다. 시차 때문에 피곤하고 졸린 눈꺼풀을 넘어 30년 전의 흥분이 되살아나면서 가슴이 뛰었다.
삼삼오오 테이블에 모여 깔깔 거리며 만든 에이프론 디자인 시간은 우리를 동심으로 돌아가게 만들었다. 서로의 아픔을 공유하며 위로하는 시간은 참으로 우리의 마음을 촉촉하게 적시어 주었다. 교단 탈퇴로 인해 아픔의 시간이 지나고 다시 회복하고 있는 남가주여선교회 연합회의 사역보고 시간과 개인적인 아픔을 겪고 그 아픔 속에서 서로를 위하여 기도하고 위로받은 경험을 나누어 주신 사모님의 간증과 불과 얼마 전에 수술하시고도 부엌에서 열심히 봉사하시는 권사님 모습도 아름다웠다. 그리고 최근 남편이 소천하신 권사님의 아픔을 서로 위로하는 시간은 슬프지만 잘 이기고 계신 권사님을 서로 가슴으로 말없이 안아주는 아름다운 시간이었다.
그리고 “난민…….”난민( refugee) 의 정의는 박해, 전쟁, 테러, 극도의 빈곤, 기근, 자연재해를 피해 다른 나라로 망명한 사람들을 칭한다. 전 세계적으로 난민 문제는 지금도 진행 중이며, 매년 그 규모가 커지고 있다고 한다. 내가 아는 난민은 남미쪽에서 미국으로 넘어오는 난민들이다.
나도 집단으로 몰려와서 우리의 평화를 깨는 그들이 내가 낸 세금 갉아먹는 귀찮은 존재쯤으로 생각했고, 몰려드는 라티노 난민자들을 볼 때 곱지않은 시선으로 보아 왔던 것도 사실이다. 오늘날 남미 국가에서 목숨 걸고 미국을 찾는 이유는 자국 정부가 그들의 기본적 필요를 포용하지 못하기 때문이다. 불청객인 이들을 막기 위해서 미국정부는 온갖 노력을 경주한다. 물리적으로 그들을 추방할 인력을 계속 늘리기도 하고 장벽도 더 높이 쌓는다.
통합 이민법(Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act)으로 불청객 차단을 위한 노력은 계속되고 있다. 늘 신문에서, T.V에서 대했던 뉴스는 정치적 편견에 따른 의견만을 제시하는 것일 수도 있고 선거철을 겨냥한 정책일 수도 있다. 그러나 영상으로 본 남미 난민의 참혹한 실태와 최영수 변호사님의 설명으로 그동안 내가 알고, 생각하고 있던 난민에 관한 내용에서 생각이 바뀌어야 된다는 것을 자각했다. 난민을 보호해야 할 법적인 의무가 우리 모두에게 있다는 사실과 우리 모두 이민자이고, 나그네였으며 성경에는 이런 이웃을 환대하고 따뜻하게 대하고 도움을 주어야 한다고 말씀하고 있다. 실제로 예수님도 애굽에 피난 가셨었고 출애굽한 이스라엘 사람들도 핍박을 피해 도망나온 최초의 난민 이었다. 내가 무엇을 어떻게 할 수 있는지는 모르겠지만, 그러나 분명한 것은 적어도 내가 난민을 보는 관점이 달라졌다는 것이다.
임원수련회를 끝내고 덤으로 따라온 문화체험은 압도되는 무대와 의상, 연기력, 브로드웨이에서 보는 연극은 촌사람 입을 떡 벌어지게 하는 매력 있는 체험이었다. 나야 다시 불러주는 은혜를 입어 옛 친구들 만나고 여선교회 일에 동참하게 되어 좋기는 하지만, 임원의 평균 연령이 자꾸 올라가는 안타까운 점도 있었다. 이번 가을 전국지도자 훈련에 많은 젊은이들이 와서 여선교회의 매력에 풍덩 빠져 젊은 일군들이 많이 영입되었으면 좋겠다.

Executive Retreat Reflection
Everyone who knows me would ask, "Why would someone who gets cold so easily be heading to New York this winter?" Bundled up, I set off on my way. My heart was fluttering with excitement, yet I couldn't help but worry about how cold it might get. The trip was only for three days, but I packed such an enormous amount of luggage and equipment that my husband was joking that it looked like an immigrant's bag. I woke up at 3 am and headed to the airport early morning. The flight was delayed, so I rushed straight to the meeting place instead of the hotel where we were told there would be kimbap for lunch. Upon entering the warm inside, other executive members warmly welcomed me, and all my worries instantly vanished into the air. Contrary to the previous warning that it would be intense training immediately starting from day one, I was able to relax and handle the busy schedule without feeling pressured, unlike in the past. I learned many things that I had never considered before.
I could again feel the excitement I felt at the Scarlett Bennett Center thirty years ago. It was such a marvelous moment when I first attended the National Training. The first thing on the schedule was a Bible Study session about Sarah and Hagar, which was entirely different from what I had known before, offering a new perspective. Until then, I thought I was Sarah, but I was Hagar. It was a moment when my preconceived notions were shattered, allowing me to see things from Hagar's perspective and experience.
Gathering around the table, designing aprons, and laughing together, it felt like traveling back in time to an innocent childhood. Sharing each other's pains and comforting one another truly softened and warmed our hearts. The report time of the Cal-Pacific Conference KUMW Network, during which personal pains were shared, along with listening to the testimony of a pastor's wife being comforted by praying for another in times of personal struggle, seeing a deaconess tirelessly serving in the kitchen despite recently having undergone surgery, as well as comforting a deaconess who is mourning the loss of her husband yet strongly going through it…it was a beautiful moment of supporting one another, no words were spoken but we could feel the warmth and comfort as we gave a tight hug to one another with our hearts.
Next was on "Refugees..." The definition of refugees refers to people who have fled from persecution, war, terrorism, extreme poverty, famine, or natural disasters and are seeking refuge in other countries. The refugee issue remains a global concern, with its scale increasing every year. My understanding of refugees, largely shaped by someone's opinion, had been biased and limited. However, witnessing the harrowing reality of Latin American refugees through watching video footage and listening to Attorney Choi's explanation made me realize that my perspective on refugees needed to change. It is a legal obligation for us all to protect refugees, and the Bible instructs us to welcome and help such neighbors. Jesus Himself sought refuge during times of distress, and the Israelites were the first refugees fleeing persecution. Though uncertain of what I can do realistically, one thing is clear: my perspective on refugees has changed.
The cultural experience session that followed after the executive training was such a captivating experience, especially for someone from the countryside like me, as we watched an enchanting stage performance with elaborate costumes and acting skills akin to a Broadway play. While it's such a blessing to be able to reunite with old friends and participate in NNKUMW events, it's also sad to see the average age of executives steadily increasing. I hope that many more young people can join us at the upcoming National Training this fall and be drawn to our network to recruit young leaders.

지난 30년간 여선교회를 통하여 우리를 양육해 주신 그 분께서 닫혀진 저의 눈을 다시 뜨게 하시고, 느끼게 하시고, 행하게 하실 것입니다. 힘 있게 비상하는 2024 전국여선교회 연합회를 축복합니다.
오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개 치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤치 아니하리로다(이사야 40:31)

Attending the National Executives Training Retreat

I deeply thank our Executive Director Myungrae Lee and Coordinator for organizing the National Executive Training Retreat this past February 12-15!

Thanks to the messages delivered by the guest speakers, we were able to examine the current state we are in. Although I was curious as to why God would call us the old-timers, I was able to see that God's work will be accomplished with faith and hope as we complete the remaining tasks He has allotted to us.

He Who has nurtured and guided our network for the past 30 years will again open up the closed eyes and doors, ignite our feelings, and enable us to act. I bless the vigorous rise of the NNKUMw's year 2024.

"But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)

서부 오하이오 회장 황정희입니다.
우선 수련회 다녀올 수 있게 주관하여 주신 주님께 감사드립니다.

Executives Training Retreat Reflection

Greetings, my name is Junghee Lee, serving as President of the Western Ohio Conference KUMW Network.

First and foremost, I would like to express my thankfulness to the Lord for allowing us to participate in this training retreat. Through this retreat, I experienced how the Lord transforms the law of death in this world into the new covenant of life. It is with grace and passion that I intend to apply and implement the lessons I have learned from this training retreat to the various churches in our Western Ohio Conference.

1. Present the seminar content.
2. Seek input from pastors.
3. Report to the Western Ohio Network group chat.
4. Discuss about inviting Executive Director Myungrae Lee.
5. Introduce agenda items for the KUMW meeting.
6. Discuss the agenda for the bazaar & attendance for the National Training in September.
7. Provide information on missions for the homeless and refugees.

I will be working to process and plan for these items in this order of organization.

2024년 전국임원수련회를 다녀와서…
정확히 이게 무엇인지도 모르면서 지역 회장님이 같이 가자고 하셔서 회사에 허락을 받고 왔다. 그저 “뉴욕”이라는 도시명에 더욱 더 관심을 갖고 시작 된 계획임은 부인하지 않겠다. 하지만 일 할 사람들이 없다라는 말로 이런저런 직분을 맡고 일하면서 기쁨보다는 의무감이 앞서기 시작했고 과연 다른 교회들은 어떻게 일하고 있는지 궁금했고, 다음 세대를 여선교회로 불러 모으기 위한 조언을 얻고 싶어졌다. 또 지역사회를 위해 어떻게 일하고 있는지 배우고 싶어졌다. 분명 우리 교회 여성들도 넘치는 열정과 순종의 믿음이 있으나 어떻게 그 열정을 하나님이 원하시는 곳에 쏟아야 할지를 정확히 모르는 것도 사실인 듯 싶다. 그리고 결과는 성공적이었다. 우리 교회 뿐 아니라 많은 교회들이 젊은 여성들이 활동적이지 않음은 분명하다. 하지만 비젼을 주며 열린 환경을 만들어주면 그들도 새로운 방법으로 많은 사역들을 감당할 수 있는 능력이 있다고 말씀해 주셨다.
큰 기대 없이 참석한 전국임원수련회에서 끊임없이 열정을 갖고 하나님의 사업과 교회를 섬기시는 믿음의 선배님들을 보면서 숨통이 트이는듯했고 방향성을 좀 더 확실히 가질 수 있었다. 그리고 같이 하고 싶은 마음이 들기 시작했다.
우선 Zoom 세미나들로 정보들을 배우고 우리들이 기도하며 일 할 것들을 나누며 각종 행사들에 관심을 갖고 적극적으로 참여도를 높여 보려고 한다. 내가 하는 일에서 하나님이 하시는 일에 초점을 맞추어 성급하게 판단하지 말고 하나님이 하실 일들을 기대하면서 한 걸음씩 나아가 본다.

Attending the National Executive Training Retreat

I attended not knowing exactly what this training was about, but when the president of my local network invited me to join, I obtained permission from my work and came along. It all started with a curiosity sparked by the name "New York." However, as I took on various responsibilities and tasks, the sense of obligation began to outweigh the joy, and I became curious about how other churches were operating and wanted to gather advice on bringing the next generation into our KUMW Network. I also wanted to learn more about how they are serving the local community. While it's true that the women in our church have overflowing passion and obedient hearts to serve, it seems we don't know exactly how to channel that passion into where God desires. And the outcome was successful. We learned that many churches, including ours, lack active participation from young women. However, they assured us that with vision and an inclusive environment, they can be capable of taking on various ministries in new creative ways.

Attending the national executive training retreat with little expectation, I was inspired by the senior members who tirelessly serve in God's work and the church with unwavering passion. It felt like a breath of fresh air and provided a clearer direction. I started to feel a desire to join in. First, I plan to learn from Zoom seminars and actively participate in various events by sharing information and prayerfully discussing tasks we will undertake. Rather than hastily making judgments about what I can do, I will focus on what God is doing and take one step at a time with expectation for what He will accomplish.

평범한 천사들
나는 ‘글자’를 보면 가슴이 뛰고 ‘숫자’를 보면 골치가 아파지는 사람입니다. 그래서 우리 집의 회계도 저는 하지 않습니다. 이런 제가 지난 4년 동안 전국연합회 회계 일을 했다는 것은 기적 같은 일입니다.
재정을 관리하는 여러 가지 컴퓨터 프로그램이 있지만, 저는 한 번도 써 본 적이 없는 가계부를 쓰듯이 회계장부를 적으면서 이 일을 했습니다. 다행인 것은 글 쓰는 것을 좋아하다 보니 적는 것은 잘할 수 있었습니다. 사실 등 떠밀려서 한 일이었지만, 지나고 보니, 받은 은혜가 더 크다는 것은 부인할 수 없는 사실입니다. 마치 구레네 시몬이 억지로 진 십자가였지만 그 집안에 임했던 하나님의 은혜와 축복이 컸던 것처럼 말입니다.
여선교회 회원들, 다들 얼마나 바쁜 사람들인지 저는 잘 압니다. 가정주부로, 개체 교회에서는 주방을 책임지는 것은 물론이고, 교회 구석구석에 여선교회 손길이 안 닿는 곳이 없잖아요. 그러나, 그럼에도 불구하고 전국에 있는 지역연합회에 속한 여선교회 회원들은 전국연합회가 함께하는 선교를 위해서 정말 일개미처럼, 이리 뛰고 저리 뛰면서 선교비를 모아서 매년 보내오고, 또 수시로 보내오는 것을 받을 때마다 너무나 감동이 되었습니다. 그렇게 같은 마음과 같은 열정으로 힘을 합했기 때문에 전국연합회를 통해서 뿌려진 복음은 곳곳에서 무럭무럭 자라나고 있다고 믿습니다.
지난주에 가까운 동네 극장에서 ‘Ordinary Angels’라는 영화를 보았습니다. 1990년 켄터키주, 루이스빌에서 있었던 실화를 바탕으로 만든 영화입니다.
에드라는 남자는 젊은 아내를 천국으로 먼저 보내고, 두 딸을 홀로 키우는데, 더 안타까운 것은 작은딸이 간 이식을 받아야 하는 상황입니다. 아무리 열심히 일을 해도 병원비를 비롯한 빚만 쌓여갑니다. 그런데 그 마을에서 미용사로 일하는 샤론은 우연히 이 사실을 알고 이 가족을 돕기 위해 발 벗고 나섭니다. 샤론 자신도 개인적인 상처가 있는 사람이지만, 자신의 본업은 뒤로한 채 동네 사람들, 회사, 방송국에 이 가족들의 사정을 알리고 도움을 청합니다.
어느 날, 아이에게 이식할 간이 거리가 꽤 떨어진 어린이 병원에 도착했다는 연락을 받게 되는데 아뿔싸, 하필이면 폭설이 내려서 길도, 공항도 다 폐쇄되어서 차도 갈 수가 없고 어렵게 섭외해 놓은 헬리콥터도 뜰 수가 없는 것입니다. 그러나 샤론과 동네 사람들은 포기하지 않습니다. 드디어 헬리콥터 한 대가 가보겠다고 나서고, 동네 사람들은 헬리콥터가 그 동네 작은 교회의 주차장에 내릴 수 있도록 산처럼 쌓인 눈을 치우기 위해 삽과 연장을 들고 모두 나와서 눈을 치우고 겉옷을 모두 벗어서 주차장에 깝니다. 드디어 아버지는 어린 딸을 헬리콥터에 태우며 샤론에게 ‘You are a miracle'이라고 말을 하며 병원으로 향하고, 동네 사람들은 뛸 듯이 기뻐하며 영화는 끝이 납니다.
평범한 사람들이 힘을 합할 때 어떤 기적이 일어나는지를 보여주는 가슴 따뜻한 영화입니다. 평범하기에 그지없는 동네 사람들이 마음을 합하고 열정을 모아서 생명을 살리는 영화입니다. 분명 해피엔딩 영화인데 저는 하염없이 눈물이 났습니다.
서로를 섬기고, 절대 포기하지 않고, 함께 일할 때 어떤 기적이 일어나는지, 마치 우리 전국연합회의 모습을 보는 것 같았습니다. 그저 평범하기 이를 데 없는 아줌마들이 하나님의 선교를 위해 같은 열정으로, 발 벗고 나섰더니 하나님은 이 아줌마들을 사용하셔서 기적을 만드시는 것을 똑똑히 보기 때문입니다.
평범한 천사들, 우리가 바로 그 천사들이 아니고 누구이겠습니까? 폭설이 내려서 땅위의 길이 막히고, 하늘길이 막힌다 해도, 전국연합회에 속한 이 평범한 아줌마들, 평범한 천사들은 하나님이 내주시는 길을 따라서 쉬지 않고 이 길을 계속 걸어갈 것입니다.

Ordinary Angels

I am someone whose heart starts to race at the sight of words and whose head starts to ache at the sight of numbers. That's why I don't handle the accounting for our household. So, for me to have been handling the accounting for the NNKUMw for the past four years is such a miracle.

There are various computer programs for managing finances, but I managed this treasurer job by writing on accounting ledgers as if I were keeping a household account book, something I had never done before. Fortunately, I enjoy writing, so I was able to do it well. In fact, looking back, although it was something I was pressured into, I cannot deny that the grace I received was greater. It was like how Simon of Cyrene was forced to carry the cross, yet the grace and blessings of God that were poured onto that household were immense.

I know very well how busy the members of the KUMW are. As housewives, they are responsible for the church kitchen as well and no corner in our churches is untouched by our members' care. However, despite all this, members of the KUMW in conference networks all across the nation tirelessly collect mission offerings every year, diligently running around like ants to support missions coordinated by the NNKUMw. Whenever I received these funds, I was deeply moved by the same heart and passion, and I believe that the gospel spread through the NNKUMw is flourishing everywhere thanks to the combined efforts of these devoted individuals.

Last week, I watched a movie called "Ordinary Angels" at a local theater. It is based on a true story that took place in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1990.

Ed, a man who sent his young wife to heaven and raised two daughters by himself, faces theheartbreaking situation of his younger daughter needing a liver transplant. Despite working hard, he accumulates debts due to hospital bills and other expenses. Then Sharon, a hairdresser in town, happens to learn about this situation and steps forward to help the family. Sharon herself has personal wounds, but she puts aside her occupation and reaches out to neighbors, companies, and broadcasters to make their situation known and ask for help.

One day, they receive a call saying that the children's hospital, where the liver transplant is to take place, is quite far away. Unfortunately, a snowstorm hits, closing roads and airports, making it impossible to travel by car, and even the helicopter they had arranged cannot take off. However, Sharon and the townspeople do not give up. Finally, one helicopter volunteers to go, and the townspeople come out with shovels and extension cords to clear the snow piled up like a mountain at the parking lot of the small church in the neighborhood so that the helicopter can land. Finally, the father carries his young daughter onto the helicopter and says to Sharon, "You are a miracle," as they head to the hospital, the townspeople rejoice as if running, and the movie ends.

It's a heartwarming movie that shows what miracles can happen when ordinary people come together. It's a movie about ordinary townspeople coming together and saving lives with their hearts united as one. Although it is undoubtedly a happy ending movie, I found myself drenched in endless tears.

It felt like watching our NNKUMw. We are after all just ordinary middle-aged women, but as we work for God's mission with the same passion and determination, God uses ordinary women like us to perform His great miracles. We have clearly witnessed and experienced such testimonies..

Ordinary angels, who else could we be if not these angels? Even when the roads get blocked by a snowstorm and the sky routes are hindered, we as ordinary middle-aged women belonging to the NNKUMw, as ordinary angels, will carry on and continue this journey without rest, following the path that God paves for us.

얼마 전 독일에서 극우 정치인과 신나치주의자들의 음모가 언론에 보도되면서 우익 극단주의와 외국인 혐오에 반대하는 대규모 시위가 있었다는 뉴스를 보았다. 그리고 이러한 심각한 사회 갈등의 주요 원인이 난민 수용 문제이고 이것을 이용한 신나치의 세력이 급속도로 커지고 있다는 것이다.

독일뿐 아니라 내가 살고 있는 미국도 대통령 선거를 앞두고 이민에 관한 화두가 정치적 쟁점이 되고 있는 이 시기에 여선교회 학당에서 기획한 웨비나 ‘기독교인들은 이민과 난민을 어떻게 생각하는가?’ 소식은 참으로 반갑지 않을 수 없었다.
나는 이민과 난민의 문제는 정치적이고 거시적인 관점보다는 한 개인으로서 어려움에 처해있는 타인을 보는 태도에 관한 것이 먼저 고민되어야 하지 않을까란 생각과 감정적으로만 포용하는 입장보다 설득력 있는 지식이 필요하다고도 생각해 왔었지만, 사람들과 대화하고 배울 기회가 없어 아쉬움을 가지고 있었다.
그리고 특히 사회의 비주류와 약자들에게 관용적인 태도를 기대했던 대다수의 교회와 기독교 단체들이 오히려 이들에게 배타적인 입장을 보이는 현 모순적 세태에서 이런 내용의 웨비나를 기독교 단체에서 주관한다는 것에 더욱 감사한 마음으로 참석했다.

두 시간 남짓 이민자 보호 교회에서 봉사하시는 뉴욕의 노래하는변호사 최영수님이 준비해 오신 강의는 모호한 불안함의실체를 깨는 ‘앎의 기쁨’이었고, 어려움에 처해 있는 타인을 위해 함께 진지하게 고민하고 나누는 70여 명의 참여자들의 모습들이 감동으로 다가왔다.
세상을 창조해 놓으시고 인간의 삶에는 개입을 안 하시는 신에 대한 나의 원망이 이런 순간 역전하며 벅차오른다. ‘사람을 통하여’ 역사하시는 하나님의 실재함을 느끼는 순간이었다.

진실을 알았음에도 불구하고 내가 어렵게 낸 세금으로 모든 혜택을 받고, 각종 사회 문제를 야기하며 범죄율마져 높이는 위험한 존재로 낙인이 찍힌 이민자들에 대한 미심쩍음은 쉽게 풀리지 않을 것이다. 살기 힘들어지면 희생양이 필요하고 그 희생양은 아무것도 가지지 않은 약자가 되어온 사회적 현상을 지금껏 수없이 보아왔기 때문이다.
그러나 우리 자신에게서 ‘선함’을 발견하고 실천의 의지를 갖는다면 나의 마음을 가로막는 두려움은 없어지리라 믿는다.
어느 시대나 어려운 이들이 있고 또 이들과 함께하는 이들이 있다. 죽음을 피해, 인간다운 삶을 위해 국경을 넘는 난민들에게 손을 내밀고 함께 살아가는 방법을 모색하는 것은 이 시대를 사는 우리에게 주어진 사명일지도 모른다.
“주님, 힘없는 난민들을 위해 기도하오니 그들에게 인내하는 힘과 안전함을 주시옵소서...” .
웨비나를 마무리하면서 참여자들과 함께 걸었던 십자가의 길 위의 기도는 난민들은 곧 험난한 세상을 살아가야 하는 힘없는 우리이기도 하다는 것을 깨닫게 했다. 그리고 진정한 사랑의 언어는 타인을 위한 기도라는 것임을 이 십자가의 길의 기도를 통해 알게 되었다.
두 시간 동안의 여정에서 인생의 참 귀한 것들을 얻은 느낌이다,
이 시간을 기획하고 참여하신 모든 분께 감사한 마음을 전합니다.

Participating in the Virtual School

Recently, I came across a news report about a conspiracy by far-right politicians and neo-Nazi sympathizers in Germany that sparked large-scale protests against right-wing extremism and xenophobia. It was disheartening to learn that one of the main causes of such serious social conflicts is the issue of refugee acceptance and the rapid rise of neo-Nazi influence exploiting this matter.

Even in the United States where I live, immigration has become a political focal point with the upcoming presidential election. At such a time like this, it was indeed heartening to hear that the webinar hosted by NNKUMW was about "How do Christians think about immigration and refugees?"

Personally, I have always believed that the issue of immigration and refugees should first be approached from the perspective of how we view and treat individuals in need, rather than from a political or macroscopic standpoint. I have also felt the need for persuasive knowledge rather than solely emotional inclusivity. However, I have been disappointed by the lack of opportunities to engage in dialogue and learn from others.

Particularly, in the current paradoxical situation where the majority of churches and Christian organizations, places where we expect to be tolerant towards society's outliers and the marginalized, are instead displaying exclusionary attitudes, I felt even more grateful that such a webinar on this topic was being organized by a Christian organization.

The two-hour-long lecture prepared by Attorney Youngsoo Choi who volunteers at the Sanctuary Church in New York was truly an enlightening moment filled with "the joy of knowledge" that dispelled ambiguous anxieties. Witnessing over 70 participants earnestly deliberating and sharing their concerns for those in difficulty was deeply moving.

It was a moment when my resentment towards God, who created the world but seems uninvolved in human affairs, was reversed, and I was instead filled with overwhelming gratitude. It was a moment when I truly felt the reality of God, who works through His people.

However, despite knowing the truth, the unease towards immigrants labeled as dangerous individuals who drain society's resources, increase crime rates, and receive various benefits funded by my hard-earned taxes, will not easily dissipate. This stems from the societal phenomenon where scapegoats are required when life becomes difficult, and the scapegoats have often been the vulnerable and the weak, those who possess nothing.

Yet, I believe that if we discover "kindness" within ourselves and have the determination to act, the fear blocking our hearts will disappear. In every era, there are those in need and those who stand with them. Seeking ways to extend a helping hand to refugees crossing borders to escape death and live a dignified life may be the mission bestowed upon us in this era.

As we concluded the webinar with a communal prayer on the road to the cross, praying for strength and safety for powerless refugees, I realized that these refugees also represent us, powerless individuals, who must navigate through a challenging world. And through this prayer, I learned that the true language of love is the prayer interceding for others. I felt that I had gained invaluable insights into life during this two-hour journey.

I express my sincere gratitude to everyone who organized and participated in the webinar.

25일 제 15회 학당은 “ 기독교인들은 이민과 난민을 어떻게 생각하는가” 라는 주제로 강사 최영수 변회사님의현재 미국의 이민과 난민의 문제를 자세히 들을 수 있었다.
변호사님의 강의는 현재 미국의 난민문제의 사실을 (facts) 자세히 설명해 주었다.
통계와 또 강사님의 직접 국경지의 난민들이 있는 곳에 방문하여 보고 느끼신것도 자세히 알려주셨고
우리가 모르던 국제법과 정부의 정책도 알려주셨다.
강의가 끝나고 소구룹으로 나뉘어 각 구룹에 주어진 문제를 이야기하고 발표하는 시간으로 마쳤다.

내가 속했던 구룹에 주어진 문제는 “나의 이민과 난민에 대한 일반적 생각이나 오해는 무엇이며 어떻게 극복할 수 있을까?” 였다.

강의중에 7가지의 일반적인 오해는
1. 과거보다 현재 불법 이민이 더 큰 문제이다?
2. 국경 상황은 정말 위기인가?
3. 현재 급증하는 이민, 난민 문제는 미국에 한정된 문제이다?
4. 미국의 관대한 이민정책이 난민 문제를 부추기는가?
5. 물리적 장벽이나 강력한 이민 정책이 이민, 난민자의 유입을 근본적으로 줄이거나 차단할 수 있다?
6. 미국 유입 난민이나 이민자가 미국 재정을 축내고 범죄율을 높히고 미국인의 직장을 빼앗고 있다?
7. 난민과 이민자는 진정한 망명 신청자가 아니다?

우리 그룹에서는 이미 강사님이 알려주신 이러한 오해를 가지고 이야기를 나누었다.
강사님의 강의 내용이 거의 facts 를 이야기 해 주셔서 위의 오해를 가지고 있는 우리의 생각을 바꾸게도 되었다.
이민과 난민의 문제의 심각성, 현재 뉴스를 통해 들리는 범죄때문에 불안하기도 하고, 우리 신변의 안전을 걱정한다고 하신분도 있고, 경제적 손실, 정책상으로 어떻게 뉴스에 보도 되는가도 잘 판단해야 한다고 이야기를 나누었다. 또 이러한 문제는 오래전부터 있던 문제로 현재 미국보다 더 일찍이 유럽에서 당면하기도 했다.
국제법이 있어 이민자와 난민들의 인권과 생존을 보장해 준다는 것도 새로운 배움이였다.

끝으로 나는 우리에게 주어진 질문에 이렇게 대답한다.
우리는 누구인가? 여성이며 이민자이고 기독교인으로 예수님을 따르는 사람으로
이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하라는 계명과 가장 적은자에게 한 것이 나에게 한 것이라는
예수님의 말씀을 가슴에 담고 실천에 옮기는 행동하는 예수님의 제자가 되어야 한다.
하나님의 백성을 섬기는 부름에 “ 내가 여기 있나이다 주의 백성 섬기오리다” 라고 다시 다짐하는 시간이였다.

Attending the 15th Virtual School

On the evening of the 25th, I participated in the 15th Virtual School. This 15th Virtual School provided the opportunity to hear in detail about the current immigration and refugee issues in the United States under the theme "How do Christians think about immigration and refugees?" with a lecture by Attorney Youngsoo Choi, NY. Attorney Choi's lecture provided detailed explanations of the facts surrounding the current refugee issues in the United States. He also shared statistics and his firsthand experiences from visiting areas with refugees at the border. He also enlightened us about international law and government policies we were unaware of.

After the lecture, we divided into small groups to discuss and give presentations on the given issues. The topic assigned to my group was, "What are the general thoughts or misconceptions about immigration and refugees, and how can we overcome them?"

During the lecture, seven common misconceptions were identified:

1. Is illegal immigration a bigger problem now than in the past?
2. Is the border situation truly a crisis?
3. Is the current increase in immigration and refugee issues limited to the United States?

4. Does the lenient immigration policy of the United States exacerbate the refugee crisis?
5. Can physical barriers or strict immigration policies fundamentally reduce or block the influx of immigrants and refugees?
6. Do incoming refugees or immigrants drain the U.S. economy, increase crime rates, and take away jobs from Americans?
7. Are refugees and immigrants not genuine asylum seekers?

In our group, we discussed these misconceptions based on what the speaker had already shared. The speaker's presentation of facts helped change our thoughts regarding these misconceptions.

Some participants expressed their worries about the seriousness of immigration and refugee issues, particularly due to the crimes being reported on the news. We also discussed concerns about our safety, economic losses, and the importance of critically evaluating how these issues are portrayed in the media. Furthermore, we acknowledged that these issues have been ongoing, and Europe has been facing these challenges even earlier than the United States. Learning about how international law guarantees the rights and survival of immigrants and refugees was also a new insight for us.

Finally, in response to the question presented to us, this is my answer:

Who are we? As women, immigrants, and Christians following Jesus, we should carry the commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to do unto the least of these as unto ourselves. We must become disciples of Jesus who hold His words close to our hearts and put them into practice, reaffirming our commitment to serve God's people with the words, 'Here I am, send me, to serve your people, O Lord.'

주님, 난민 형제자매들의 고난을 증거하는 저희들의 마음을 일깨워 주시고 저희가 마땅히 져야 할 십자가를 지게하여 주소서.

주님, 주님께서 시몬을 부르셨듯이 저희를 부르시어 주님의 십자가를 지고 주님 백성들의 무거운 짐을 덜도록 인도하여 주소서.
6: 베로니카가 수건으로 예수님의 얼굴을 닦아드림.
주님, 저희의 눈을 열어주시어 도움이 필요한 형제자매들 안에서 고난받는 주님의 얼굴을 보게 하여 주소서.
7: 예수님께서 두 번째 넘어지심.
주님, 저희가 주님의 인성과 고난을 바라보듯이 난민 형제자매들의 인성과 고난을 바라볼 수 있게 하여 주소서.
8: 예수님께서 예루살렘의 여인들을 위로하심.
주님, 전 세계의 여성과 자녀들을 위해 기도 합니다. 주님은 저희에게 그들이 억압을 당할 때 함께 울어 주라고 하셨고,주님이 그러셨듯이 그들의 재능, 강인함, 고난을 함께 보라고 말씀하셨습니다. 주님, 저희에게 지혜를 주시어 성차별과 구조적 억압을 타파하게 하여 주시고 난민 인구의 절대다수인 여성들과 자녀들을 보호하여 주시옵소서.

주님, 간절히 도움을 청하는 난민 이웃들의 눈빛이 저희로 하여금 행동하게 하여 주시고 저희가 주님의 고난에 응답하듯 그들의 고난에 응답하게 하여 주소서.

주님, 저희로 하여금 미국에서 보다 나은 삶을 간절히 찾는 난민들 안에서 인간의 존엄성을 깨닫게 하여 주소서. 또한 미국을 난민들의 인권을 빼앗지 않고 그들을 범죄자로 취급하지 않는 나라로 변화시키도록 저희를 도와주소서.
11: 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박히심
주님, 저희가 십자가 위에서 주님께서 찔리신 상처를 바라보듯 난민 형제자매들이 당한 상처를 바라볼 수 있게 하여 주소서. 평화와 치유를 위해 기도 합니다.
12: 예수님께서 십자가 위에서 돌아가심.
주님, 환경 파괴로 인한 난민 발생에 기여한 저희를 용서해 주시고 형제자매들이 환경 재난으로 고향을 등지지 않도록 환경 치유를 실천하게 하소서.
13: 예수님의 시신이 십자가에서 내려짐.
주님, 고향을 떠난 피난민 형제 자매들이 어둠 속에서도 희망과 강인함을 잃지 않도록 도움을 주소서.
14: 예수님께서 무덤에 묻히심.
주님, 난민들과 실향민들이 낯선 땅에서 새로운 삶을 준비하는 동안 그들에게 빛과 희망이 되어 주소서.

(Use these Stations of the Cross to accompany Jesus on his journey, as we watch and pray over displaced people around the world.)
 
I - JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH
Lord, may we not wash our hands of our displaced brothers and sisters worldwide, and may you rain down upon them with all of the love and peace you were denied in your condemnation.
II - JESUS TAKES UP HIS CROSS  
Lord, may we be “struck and shocked by the plight” of our brothers and sisters worldwide and follow in the steps of Fr. Arrupe as we humbly bear the cross that awareness brings.
III - JESUS FALLS FOR THE FIRST TIME
Lord, we pray for vulnerable migrants that you may grant them strength and safety in their journeys, and we pray for open hearts to understand their desperate motivations.
IV - JESUS MEETS HIS BLESSED MOTHER
Lord, we pray for all of the displaced mothers throughout the world. In their strength and vulnerability, may they feel your presence as they do their best to care for their families amid displacement.
V - SIMON OF CYRENE BEARS THE CROSS
Lord, may you remind us that you have called us to carry your cross and ease the burdens of your people just as you called Simon. May we walk with you, just as we are called to walk with our displaced brothers and sisters.

Lord, as we see you fall again, help us to also see our displaced brothers and sisters beaten down by the COVID-19 pandemic. While we cannot physically be with them, help us to pray for them in your spirit. Give them your hope and your light.

Lord, help us to recognize the humanity of those seeking a better life in the United States and help us to create a country where they are not stripped of their possessions and judged as criminals.
XI - JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS
Lord, as we see you wounded on the cross, help us to recognize the wounds of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. We pray for peace and healing.
XII - JESUS DIES
Lord, forgive us for what we have done to contribute to displacement through environmental destruction and help us to heal the earth so that no more of our brothers and sisters are displaced by its destruction.
XIII - JESUS IS TAKEN FROM THE CROSS
Lord, we pray that you continue to give hope and strength in darkness to our sisters and brothers who have been forced to flee their homes.
XIV - JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB
Lord, may you provide light and hope to refugees and displaced people as they wait to learn of their fate.

현재 한인연합감리교회가 당면한 어려움으로 인해 상처받고 힘들어하는 평신도들에게 치유와 비전을 제시해 줄 수 있는 시간이 될 것입니다. 이번 심포지엄 에서는
(1) 연합감리교회 교단에서 한인연합감리교회가 신앙의 고유성을 지켜 나갈 수 있도록 어떤 정책을 가지고 있는가를 제시한다.
(2) 2세 목회자와 2세 평신도의 입장에서 연합감리교회가 가지고 있는 장점들이 무엇이며, 그 장점들을 가지고 2세들을 위한 목회와 사역을 어떻게 해 나가야 하는지를 제시한다.
(3) 한인연합감리교회 평신도들이 고난 속에서도 치유를 위한 희망의 노래를 부르며, 변화하는 세상 속에서 교회의 역할과 사명이 무엇인지를 고백해 보는 시간이 될 것이다.

The 2nd Symposium for Lay Members of Korean United Methodist Church

The United Methodist Church Jurisdictional Korean Missions will be hosting The 2nd Symposium for Lay Members via Zoom. It will be a time of providing healing and vision to lay Members who are feeling wounded and challenged due to the current difficulties faced by the denomination.

In this symposium:

(1) We will present the policies that the KUMC has in place to uphold the traditions of faith within the denomination.
(2) From the perspective of second-generation pastors and lay members, we will discuss the advantages that the KUMC possesses, and how to best utilize these advantages to carry out pastoral ministry and serve the second generation.

그리스도교를 완전히 바꾸어 놓은 바울을 이해한다는 것은 그가 남긴 글을 이해한다는 것과 같다는 작가의 시선은 이 책의 시작점이다. 바울의 가르침과 활동이 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 파악하려면 당시의 사회와 사상의 풍경에 대해 알아야 한다는 필요성에 동감하며 바울의 시대로 빠져본다.
“나는 사도들 가운데서 가장 작은 사도입니다. 나는 사도라고 불릴 만한 자격도 없습니다. 그것은 내가 하나님의 교회를 박해했기 때문입니다” (고전15:9)
사도 이전 사울이던 본인의 모습을 고백한 사도 바울의 고백을 우리는 익히 잘 알고 있다. 누구나 우러러보던 로마 시민권자이며, 베냐민 지파의 후손인 유대인이며, 당대 최고의 존경을 받던 랍비 가브리엘의 문하생으로서 누가 보아도 업신 여길 수 없는 위치의 그가, 주님을 만나 자신을 부인하며 가장 낮은 자리로 내려가는 그의 인생을 쫒는 것은, 초대 그리스도인들의 삶 전체를 바꿔 놓은 이유를 찾아가는 여정과도 겹치는 부분일 것이다.
그리스도인 입장에서는 바울은 내부인이기도 하지만 외부인이기도 하다. 그의 편지에는 외부인의 입장에서 아낌없는 분노를 쏟아내기도 하고 남을 교묘히 조종하거나 사나워지는 순간들이 있다. 하지만 그 분노 안에는 내부인들에게 가지고 있는 깊고도 본능적인 사랑이 존재한다. 그가 쓴 편지들을 통해 나타난 입체적인 인간이 바로 바울의 모습이다.
그리스도인에게, 아니 인류사회에 거대한 영향을 끼친 바울의 가르침 중에는 사회 전반에 흐르는 장벽을 허물었다는 것을 빼 놓을 수 없다. “유대 사람도 그리스 사람도 없으며, 노예도 자유인도 없으며, 남자와 여자가 없습니다. 여러분 모두가 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나이기 때문입니다” (갈3:28) 하나님의 백성에 온전히 속하게 되는 존엄함을 모든 사람에게로, 존경받는 사람들과 경건한 이들이 결코 함께 있고 싶어 하진 않는 이들에게까지 확장하는 주님의 가르침을 환대, 받아들임, 맞아들임이라고 표현 했다.
하나님께서 온 세상에 일어나는 공적 사안을 논의하는 회의에 모든 이, 즉 노예, 이주자, 시민이든, 누구든 참석하도록 부르셨다는 그의 선언은 교회 공동체 안에서는 누구나 시민이며 우리는 모두 하늘에 속한 시민이라는 그의 주장은 지금 우리가 살고 있는 현실에도 반영되어야 할 부분이기도 하다.
바울에게 자유란 무엇보다도 하나님께서 우리를 환대하시기 전에 먼저 하나님을 만족시켜야 한다는 강박에서 벗어나는 것이다. 하나님은 우리로 인해 기뻐하시며 영원 전부터 우리를 환대하고 계신다고 그는 강조한다. 우리 안에서 하나님의 활동을 하시도록 하는 자유, 즉 생명을 불어넣고 용서와 화해를 약속하며 말과 행동을 통해 희망을 전하는 활동을 하시도록 하는 자유에 대해 다시 한번 생각해 보게 된다.
그리스도 안에서의 공동체는 각 사람을 자유롭게 해 그만이 공동체의 삶에 베풀 수 있는 것을 베풀게 하는 것, 바로 하나님의 영광을 드러내며 기쁨과 봉사 배려, 너그러움을 드러내는 공동체에는 누구에게나 열려 있는 것이다. 부와 빈곤, 높고 낮음의 신분, 배움의 차이, 성별에 상관없이 열려있는 그리스인의 공동체에서 자유로워지기를 바울은 강조했다.
이 책을 통해 예수로 인해 일어난 “위험천만한 새로움”을 더 잘 감지하기를 희망한다는 작가 로완 윌리엄스의 말처럼 우리 모두 주님이 주시는 새로움에 늘 깨어 반응하기를 고대한다.

Meeting God in Paul: Reflections for the Season of Lent

This book starts with establishing the perspective that understanding Paul, who completely transformed Christianity, is synonymous with understanding the writings he left behind. Recognizing how Paul's teachings and activities took place requires an understanding of the social and intellectual landscape of the time, so the book delves into Paul's era.

"I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God." (1 Corinthians 15:9)

We are familiar with this confession of the apostle Paul, who confessed his former self as Saul before becoming an apostle. Regardless of being a Roman citizen, a descendant of the tribe of Benjamin, and a protege of the highly respected Rabbi Gamaliel, Paul descended to the lowest position by denying himself and meeting the Lord. This pursuit of his life coincides with the journey to find the reasons that transformed the lives of the early Christians.

From the perspective of Christians, Paul is both an insider and an outsider. His letters sometimes pour out anger from an outsider's perspective and moments of subtly manipulating others or becoming fierce. However, within that anger lies a deep and instinctive love for insiders. The multifaceted human revealed through the letters he wrote is the true image of Paul.

Among Paul's teachings that have had a profound impact on Christians, it is important not to overlook his efforts to break down barriers prevalent in society. "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28) His teaching extends the dignity of belonging to God's people to everyone, welcoming not only respected and devout individuals but also those who do not want to be with them.

His proclamation that everyone, whether slave, immigrant, citizen or any other status, should attend meetings discussing public matters throughout the world, reflects a part that should also be reflected in the reality we live in today within the church community, where everyone is a citizen and we are all citizens of heaven.

For Paul, freedom means breaking away from the compulsion to satisfy God before He welcomes us. He emphasizes that God delights in us and has welcomed us from eternity. Through this book, we are encouraged to rethink the freedom to act on God's behalf, His freedom which breathes life into us, promises forgiveness and reconciliation, and spreads hope through words and actions.

The Christian community is open to everyone to be free to give what they can in community life, revealing the glory of God and showing joy, service, consideration, and generosity. Paul emphasized the freedom to become free in the community of the Greeks, regardless of wealth and poverty, high and low status, differences in learning, and gender.

As the author Rowan Williams hopes that we sense the "perilous novelty" brought about by Jesus, we desire that we all keep ourselves spiritually awake to always respond to the new things our Lord grants us each day.

Since then, we have been holding leadership training for our KUMW members as well as our daughters, second-generation Korean women. Moreover, we have been learning, sharing and growing together through holding leadership training for UMW women in Asia.
Our seniors of faith have trained lay female leaders under the vision of "Women help fellow women to make a better future,” continuing to write the history of great women mission with offerings, prayers and dedication.
